handball check.
Unnatural position? Attempting to shield the ball?

Can not be a clear and obvious mistake when it takes that long
and the referee also had a clear view of it

Penalty all day long under current interpretation of the
handball law...surprising it took so long for VAR to award it or
why it wasn't given on the field from 5 yards away

For me it is a penalty, the side on angle showed the hand moving
towards the ball. Granted the handball law keeps changing from
week to week, but as I understand it, that is a penalty.
The thing that annoyed me was the time it took for the officials
to decide on the outcome, nearly seven minutes is frustrating
for all concerned. Don’t understand what the delay was…..is it
deliberate or not? Cricket and rugby generally get the decisions
sorted within a short time, football has to be the odd one out
as usual.

Having done well for the majority of the game, the referee has
lost a little bit of control. Two clear yellow cards missed, one
for stopping a promising attack and a second yellow for kicking
the ball away which should have led to a red card for two
yellows.
Though I will counter that argument by saying that England
employed some dark arts by putting off the Spanish penalty taker
and that should have been punished accordingly.
The temperature of the game has gone up and the referee has just
let her performance slip.

Only just turned on at 90 mins but there seems to be a lot of
referee bashing from the itv commentary

Agree with above comments - I haven’t watched lots of the
earlier games but I think this ref got similar reviews in the
semi final of not taking enough action. Not an awful display but
got weaker in the last 10 or 15 minutes. Good decision in the
end with the penalty.
Any other player that kicked the ball away, it would have been a
second yellow. You can see why players, staff and fans all get
frustrated by decisions like that.
