Or to put it another way...if the number on the board is no
longer that accurate an estimation of the time remaining, why
bother with it at all anymore? For what purpose and to whose
benefit is it?

One thing I've noticed is a significant reduction in the amount
of time wasted by players rolling around faking injury. In fact
in the 4 games I've seen so far (2EFL and 2 non league) I can't
recall a single instance of a physio being called into action.

It gives a rough guide as to a minimum of time that should be
played.
It wouldn't make any sense for the referee to decide they wanted
to play a minimum of 10 minutes but indicate 12 on the board in
case another 2 minutes were lost. You might have some games
where no extra time is lost and other games where 5 minutes is
lost, perhaps because of a VAR review or a bad injury.
If the referee didn't have to put up any time at all then no one
would have any clue of approximately how long was left, and
there'd be no way of holding the referee to account for whether
they'd added any further time on for additional stoppages. As I
mentioned in another thread Rob Jones indicated 11 minutes of
added time in the Brentford V Spurs game but didn't seem to add
any extra time for the goal that was scored during the stoppage
time. If we hadn't known how long Jones had intended to play
when the half reached 45 minutes then there'd be no way to know
this.

Maybe at the end of the ten signalled minutes the board should
go up again to show many more minutes are going to be added
(repeat ad infinitum) :)

I watched the last ten minutes or so of the Hearts v Rosenborg
game last night. Seven minutes additional time was signalled
during which Hearts scored what turned out to be the winner with
appropriate celebration, two substitutions were made and hearts
certainly weren't rushing to get on with the game. I'd expected
10 or 11 minutes to be played and was astonished when the final
whistle was blown with the clock showing 98:15.

I watched a fair bit of the Hearts game-quite entertaining to
watch.Referee was from Israel-D.Fuxman.I have never come across
this name before-has he had previous appointments?
Also,I realised that I have no idea of the standard of top
football in Israel,or of the standard of top referees.I know one
[at least]gets Champions League matches but I have little
knowledge of standards-perhaps someone out there could enlighten
me?
Unfortunately,I missed some of the second half due to incoming
phone calls..........However,I thought Mr.Fuxman was very well
up with play yet didnt seem to see pushes in the back at all.It
got tetchy mid way through the half with justified yellow
cards.
It had calmed down later-I thought he had a reasonable match all
in all.Interested to follow progress.
The match was on Channel 187-the previous week they showed
Hibs-Luzern.This was also entertaining,with a referee from
Lithuania
who also had to clamp down on awkward player behaviour.Again
yellow cards had the desired effect.Again, over the piece,a
reasonable performance from the referee.
