A MADLEY - Newcastle v Aston Villa

Madley not popular one iota with the home fans after only
cautioning Martinez for his mad dash from goal to clean out
Almiron.
The calls for a red are not justified IMO as he was no where
near DOGSO territory. Clear yellow.
Madley has done well in the first half.

Madley seems to have toughened up over the summer - my last
viewing of him was Arsenal v Brighton, where he was quite
heavily criticised for being too lenient on foul play and
dissent. So far, I think he's been pretty spot on with his
cards, including one to Guimaraes for waving an imaginary yellow
card in his face, something that ought to be clamped down on
more than it does. I agree that yellow was correct for
Martinez, nowhere near DOGSO.

The wife said to me during the match the referee looks full of
himself
Looks like Madley has bulked up a bit, looks a bit more of the
Rob Jones build anyone think?

With my far from perfect eyesight, I have to say from the TV
pictures, a couple of the Newcastle goals did look offside. The
2nd and 4th I think.
Maybe the angles were deceptive or I was just picking out the
wrong shirts! For the first of those, (i.e. 2nd Newcastle
goal), the scorer looked offside when the initial cross / free
kick came in but not when the ball was played from which he
scored. That wouldn't be a new phase of play, would it?
As I say, probably just my eyes but just curious how others saw
them.

I hate seeing fouls like that which have nothing to do with the
ball and are often referred to as "taking one for the team". It
could be argued in that instance that totally ignoring the ball,
grabbing a player round the body and chucking him to the ground
is violent conduct??

My only criticism of Andy Madley (which can also be said of some
other Referees to be fair) is his general positioning. In my
opinion, he doesn't go wide enough when an attacking move or
general play develops on the left wing. He tends to stick
towards the middle of the pitch and has to make decisions from a
greater distance as a result.
