C PAWSON - Burnley v Man City

Pretty easy stuff for Pawson tonight.
Good VAR intervention by Oliver for the red, although Pawson did
put the yellow away initially which suggests he wasn’t sure
either.
Webb will be happy with the first game offerings.

Routine game for Pawson got the early penalty appeal from
Burnley spot on.
Surprised he went yellow initially for the foul on Walker looked
a nailed on red for me watching live.
Thaught the VAR intervention and handling was done very quickly
and smooth.

The only worry for me there, and always has been since VAR was
introduced, is that Pawson seemed too happy to be reliant on
VAR.
You could see from his reaction that he thought it was a red on
first viewing, but seemed happier to go yellow and be overturned
if wrong. If he believes it was SFP he should have gone red
initially and stuck to his guns.
Anyone more in the know than me aware of this is a directive
from PGMOL to go yellow if unsure?

Yep clear red. disappointing Pawson didn’t give it as I’ve
always felt he has been one of the better ones in determining
vc/sfp.

One thing that I did notice was that both VAR checks Oliver did
were very quick - with the new added time directive, I wonder if
this means VAR officials are being directed towards speeding up
the checks. Either way, Oliver's intervention on the red card
was spot on, as was his decision not to get involve in the
penalty shout which Pawson correctly waved away.

I beg to differ. Mr Pawson’s view was, I think, blocked by the
defenders body but the replays clearly show that the defender
had hold of the arm of the attacking player.
Holding is still an offence and yet a FIFA referee cannot see it

You might want to check the current laws on that.

IFAB page 99/100 of 2023 still lists holding as an offence.

It does, but page 168 then further clarifies what holding is.

And I would contend that having my arm grabbed while running
impedes my movement, but concede that it becomes a matter of
opinion.
