Howard Webb has announced that Lee Mason is returning to PGMOL
but NOT in a VAR capacity. He has returned as a coach for
officials in Leagues One and Two.

In his penultimate season, 2019-2020, Mr Mason was congratulated
on many occasions on this site about what a great season he was
having and was awarded the League Cup final, which most
contributors felt was on merit and some pondered whether he
should be awarded the FA Cup final, such was the season he was
having. 3 weeks after that final, the country shut down.
On the same weekend the following season, he disallowed the
Lewis Dunk "goal" from a quick free kick that the media, and Sky
Sports in particular, played over and over again. He was also
the VAR who advised Mr Dean to send Soucek off for violent
conduct a few weeks later. It was then announced he would retire
at the end of the season.
Maybe Mr Mason planned to retire at the end of the 2020 season
which made him more relaxed and allowed him to excel, and
continued for another season in the hope that his family would
see his final game in 2021. In hindsight, he might have wished
he'd just made the League Cup final his final game. This is
obviously all conjecture and hindsight is a wonderful thing....
anyway I digress...
Mr Mason was a football league referee for 19 years, of which 15
were on the highest division. Whatever people's thoughts on
here, or elsewhere, the powers that be thought he was good
enough not only to get onto the Premier League, but stay there
for that long. There were officials removed during that time, so
he could have been had it been deemed he was not up to the job
(as he found out when he became a dedicated VAR).
So, IMO, he would be a perfect coach for National List referees,
he knows the expectations having been at the top level for so
long and also knows the downfalls. What better person to have at
the end of the phone for the highs and lows of a referee. To
help them get better as referees, and help with disappointments
and bad decisions/games, (we all have them, and those are the
ones we remember), and to put them in the right frame of mind
for the next game.
Sadly I see that the BBC report notes the reason why he retired
as a dedicated VAR, maybe the Media should be encouraged to
adopt this "less ref bashing" that is being attempted this
season, that would be a whole new post though!
I wish Mr Mason good luck in his new venture.

Arsene Wenger was an average player but a great manager. Andrew
Flintoff was a great cricketer, but an average captain. I have
no idea whether Mason is a good coach or not, but any frailties
he may have had in his refereeing career, may be helpful in his
current role, if he is a good communicator. Good luck to him.

I never minded mason in the PL. I saw a lot of refs who were
worse than him. Good luck with the coaching Lee!

Yes, it's often said that a good (or bad) referee doesn't
necessarily make a bad (or good) administrator/coach/VAR as the
roles are different, even if there might be some overlap.
I've no idea if Mason will make a good referee coach for L1/L2
refs but the fact he made some mistakes as VAR shouldn't prevent
him from doing this role.
By the way, Howard Webb did a 30 minute interview with Mark
Chapman on 5 Live's Football Daily Podcast a few days ago which
some posters might be interested in listening to.
And I'm glad to hear VAR audio will be released more regularly
this season. I hope it includes some errors where these are made
and there is the chance for broadcasters to ask some questions
about these. I think the positives should be highlighted too but
you don't want it to seem like they are trying to cover certain
things up.
