No because Lucy Bronze was back onside in the second phase, from
the original cross yes, but she wasn’t interfering so goal
should of stood the referee and var have been poor he penalty
was harsh to, hands by her side

I don’t understand this decision at all. E2 is in an offside
position when the initial cross comes in but has moved onside by
the time the two players challenge for the ball. Whoever it
comes off is irrelevant as E2 is onside at that point.

It’s offside under the current Laws of the Game.
E2 is offside as the ball is played in. The ball comes off the
back of the Chinese defender. This is a ‘deflection’ and not a
‘deliberate play’. When the ball breaks to E2 she has gained an
advantage when the ball has been deflected by an opponent.

I thought the defender deliberately attempted to play the ball
and headed it under pressure only from an onside attacker.

There was recently some stricter guidance given about gaining
advantage / what constitutes a deliberate play.
If it merely deflected off the Chinese player, I’d agree - would
be like it coming off the GK or the post.
Can’t see clip anymore (fifa/uefa are ruthless on copyright ….!)
but I thought, from memory, they both jumped to head it? And it
at least got a touch of the England player as well as the
Chinese defender. If you shape/jump to head, that has to be a
deliberate play and new phase. To me live, it looked like a new
phase of play and a goal. Didn’t see a close up replay of the
touch though.
Just like the CRica/Zambia one, it would be a good example for
FIFA to come out and explain to help educate everyone (like
other sports do) or the average fan is never going to understand
it. In a big tournament, with all the resources and people
available, should actually be a regular feature of high-profile
tournaments.
Also, referee should’ve given a better explanation, especially
as she is an English speaker. Just saying ‘offside position’ is
meaningless and could’ve been done with a signal.
