He didn't have his finest night last night, far from it.
Inconsistent in foul detection, denied many stonewall FKs for
both teams.
He set his stall out early when their bloke stole 8yds for a
throw in, the ref told him not to go any further, then he stole
another 8yds. Why was that so bad? Well, the ref knew what he
had done and told him not to do it again. If he saw it, he
shouldn't have let them play on.
He is very good at applying the advantage rule, one of the
better ones for that I must admit.

I've seen him live at matches a few times and consider him one
of the better "low intervention" referees to emerge of late.
Sometimes non-intervention is just not possible:

I wholeheartedly agree. I think this incident might of affected
him because there was an incident later where he and his
assistant had to be protected. In hinesight, it might of been in
the interests of both parties to allow him the night off but
then you have the issue of officials willing to come to Plymouth
on a Tuesday night. Huxtable is the obvious option but only very
recently officiated us, Johnson possibly also.

His mentor coming through the ranks was Dermot Gallagher (think
there are / were both Oxford based?) so you could understand why
he has a low intervention approach.

I am not sure that 'willing' comes into it. I imagine that
unless a ref specifically closes a date, he / she is deemed to
be available to travel anywhere (within reason) to officiate. I
remember Neil Barry saying that he sometimes arrived home in
Scunthorpe at 2-3am from an evening match but was still expected
to be at work at the normal clocking-in time just a few hours
later. At least some refs are now more or less full time, and I
would think that East, Probert, Hooper and Stroud could all be
added to the list of those able to travel to Plymouth for an
evening match without running the risk of falling asleep over a
hot lathe the following morning!

John Busby somewhat puts me in the mind of Grant Hegley when he
was starting his League career and if Busby becomes anywhere
near as good a referee as Hegley became, then he will have done
very well indeed.

Grant Hegley, throwback. Wasn't it him who played Ipswich
Leicester despite almost blizzard conditions.

Attwell surely ?
Hegley's penultimate League match was at Portman Road, a hefty
home defeat to Watford.

Although as Hegley was carried off in that Watford match I very
much doubt that he appeared at Preston the following weekend.
Watford's visit was originally scheduled for Boxing Day a week
following Attwell's appearance in the snow.
