Well he’s refereed the A-League Grand Final five times
(equivalent of a Playoff Final), was one of only three full time
referees on the A-League, and is listed as a FIFA referee, so in
answer to your question - Yes, he is, if not one of, the best
they could get from Australia.
The thing Australia lacks is a depth and structure to their
referees imo. Head of Referees out here Ben Williams, has been
to England a number of times, including PGMOL conferences, to
gain a much better understanding of the system in place and how
Australia could learn from their convict counterparts. It
doesn’t seem that much has materialised from that, imo.
Jarred Gillett is unquestionably a very able referee. I feel
with the infrastructure in place in the English game, even at
EFL level, far outweighs anything available out here in
Australia.
I’m not saying Gillett will slot right in here, as I think it’ll
be far from it, and there could be an ernomous learning curve on
the horizon, but with the wealth of experience available over in
England, I feel that he’ll be easily moulded into a much better
referee than he’d ever be able to achieve over here.

Ben Wilson is the head of Australian refereeing not Ben
Williams. They are very close friends though.

Always found Jarred Gillett to be an able official. I think it
will take him a little time to adapt, possibly a few late games
this season in L1/2 to get upto speed, before next season might
be best for all parties involved.

Right you are. Wilson/Williams, you can forgive the oversight
surely? ::)

There are at least three SG1 officials on part-time contracts
who still have other jobs as well so this is nothing new......

That's slightly surprising as when the concept was introduced I
thought an exception, not too popular at the time, had been made
for David Elleray. Sadly this was not to facilitate his
attendance at the House of Lords but to continue his career as a
boarding housemaster at Harrow school, presumably a 24hour a day
job in itself.
I know Howard Webb was another but it does rather defeat the
whole object of having FULL TIME refs. That said, I am not sure
there is a great deal of evidence that devoting your whole
working hours to refereeing necessarily makes you any better at
it!

I think the main issue is if an official isn't able to properly
prepare for a game because of theri day job - say when you hear
examples of someone dashing out of the office at 3.30pm on a
Tuesday and having to leg it up the motorway for an evening ame.
If it's a job which has flexibility and can fit around
refereeing then I don't think it's too much of an issue - so
long as the individual is able to train properly and doesn't
have a disrupted pre-match preparation then I'm not sure
spending part of the working week doing something else makes
much difference.
I would much rather have Andy Madley in the SG on a part-time
contract and still allow him to continue his teaching career a
couple of days a week if necessary than have some other members
of the SG2 join the SG1 on full-time contracts.

And how long before they promote him to SG1? Given he is already
an experienced FIFA Ref that will surely come before too long
imho

What will be the situation internationally? Will he be allowed
to be part of the officiating teams for the Champions League for
instance with English officials or will he only be allowed to
represent Australia in the relevant games (international
qualifiers in that part of the world or whatever.)
I think I saw he was attending one of the forthcoming FIFA
seminars in a VAR capacity.
Of course Clattenburg stopped doing FIFA games when he moved to
Saudi Arabia.

As far as I know he cannot 'transfer' his FIFA badge but I guess
there is always room for negotiation! If he is attending the VAR
seminar then maybe he will be allowed to act as a VAR
internationally but not referee.
