Australia FIFA referee Jarred Gillett to join SG2

A new addition to the SG2 for 2019/20 is Australian referee
Jarred Gillett. He has accepted a position at the John Moore's
University in Liverpool and this all appears to be subject to a
       work visa.

Is he the best that they could get?
On a serious note it's probably fair to say that he can only
       improve the quality of SG2.

I am confused. How can he take a position in SG2 which the
article states consists of match officials who are full-time
professional when he is coming to this country to work at a
       university?

By my ( not always accurate ) maths, he was appointed a FIFA
referee at 26. It's the future of world refereeing and Riley et
al might use this opportunity to remind themselves of the fact
       and then act upon it.

I guess with VAR hitting the PL next season they feel that the
dross in SG2 can only be improved by importing other officials
from other nations, presumably to hold the substitution
       scoreboards.

Some of them are part time contracts, I'd assume that is what he
will have been offered. Half the pay etc.

A research position at a university is very rarely a part time
job though. I thought the whole point of SG2 was to allow them
time to train, go to days at St Georges Park, etc. Very
difficult to do the latter if you have a job, even a part time
       one.

Do the likes of Andy Madley still teach?
Howard Webb continued with the police for a while after he first
joined the SG I believe, although I know he took a career break
       in the end.
It seems quite possible to me that a research position could
have quite flexible hours, thus allowing him to fit in
       refereeing commitments as appropriate.

I think it’s a great move personally - if he’s coming over here
anyway for his job it would seem stupid to waste time by
starting a referee of such calibre further down the chain!

I don't know about Andy Madley but Jon Moss is still currently a
head teacher at a primary school.
