What happened to Mr. Taylor at Budapest airport was perhaps in
part caused by decisions that began to be made many years ago in
the corridors of power by those who were tasked with protecting
officials; yet have continuously eroded and reduced the tools
referees have to enforce laws originally designed as a simple
reminder of common decency and which when enforced properly
benefit players, officials and spectators alike.
We have deviated so far now from those laws that it is seen a
skill in modern refereeing to be able to tolerate disrespectful
and abusive behaviour without issuing a sanction. As a result,
and because of many other things, the position of the referee
has diminished to the point where physically attacking an
official’s family is seen by acceptable by some people. In fact,
the sad reality is that this is nothing even that new. Physical
attacks on top level referees have been seen all over the world.
On lower level referees they are all too common.
Ultimately, everyone has to take responsibility for their own
actions. Roma, their head coach, many of their fans, players and
staff deserve severe sanctions both within football and in some
cases in a criminal court.
I do think however that FIFA, UEFA and almost every national FA
have much to answer for in this sorry affair.

Comments like this are what is fuelling the problem. You seem to
think it's funny. Come back to us when your wife is getting man
handled a random middle aged man because of you doing your job.

I don’t think middle-aged men deliberately went out of their way
to get to the airport to hand out abuse, they were by chance
making their way back to Italy at the same time as Anthony
Taylor and his family were there. UEFA should have anticipated
this and provided adequate security or a separate check-in from
their vast resources but as they’re utterly incompetent it’s no
shock they didn’t. The bill for champagne for their suits at the
final was probably ten times what proper security would have
cost.
I recall a Scottish referee (whose name escapes me) at a Burns
Night shindig telling the room about him sending off both Zidane
and Edgar Davids in the same game at Juventus. The tale may have
had some artistic licence as after-dinner speakers do but he
said in the tunnel after the game was like a scene from The
Godfather where he was told never to return to Italy and was
also told by Juventus officials he would never officiate in
Italy again. He never did.
I’m sure Italian football would be much happier if they could
return to the innocent days when simple bribery (Liverpool 1965,
Dundee United 1984) was all they needed to get the result they
wanted.

Too true, and this is what happens when appointments pander to
the vested interests of those competing. Doesn’t help that
refereeing is heavily controlled by Italians at the moment!
Knowing marinho’s antics, Sevilla will have been very anxious
about the referee appointment, and this is another reason why an
English ref was a good choice - one thing to our credit is
they’re seen as strong refs who can’t be influenced.
Same with PGMOL which is too close to the premier league. In
everyone’s interest to keep ref appointments completely outside
the clubs’ influence.
UEFA refs committee will lose a lot of credibility if it doesn’t
out very publicly to back Taylor and heavily criticise some of
the serious incidents.
I agree the appointment process should be independent although
if I was Taylor/Oliver I don't think I'd especially want to
referee Roma/Juventus again. I think it's a bit different to
domestic appointments. They can quite easily get good UEFA
appointments next season without doing those teams.
I wonder if Taylor will be giving any thought as to whether he
wishes to carry on or not? I hope he does continue but it must
be hard to experience things like this, especially when your
family is involved.

accounts in the Italian media, where the general view seems to
be that Mr Taylor had a very poor game and that he did indeed
lose the plot. Trying to navigate round Mourinho's customary
graceless hysterics and the natural sour grapes that come from a
defeat in these circumstances, I think the incidents that most
upset the Italians were:
>
> 1. The failure to give a penalty against Sevilla for handball;
> 2. The failure to issue a second caution to Rakitić and
to Lamela (and perhps not to show Lamela a red card for the
clash with Ibáñez);
> 3. The failure to spot that Bounou got his fingertips to a
shot from Belotti and hence to award a corner instead of a goal
kick.
>
> I also suspect that some blame Mr Taylor for awarding what is
perceived as an excessive amount of stoppage time, which, if so,
is distinctly unfair, although I'm not sure the world is ready
for 3-hour football matches.
>
> Incident 3 was, I think, a mistake, though it is amazing how
much clearer such incidents become when you have seen several
replays, and in any case it was hardly a match-changing
incident. 1 and 2 could be put down to bias on the part of the
commentators, but it also reflects in my view different
expectations: the Italians tend to have a particularly severe
approach to handball (Irrati would have given the penalty!), and
they also tend to expect rather more cautions than would be
given elsewhere. A constant feature of the last World Cup
(where the Italians were disinterested observers!) was for a
foul to be followed by a confident prediction of a yellow card,
only for no yellow card to appear, and it seems that the
Italians are having trouble adjusting to the rather more
parsimonious use of cards currently favoured internationally.
>
> It will be interesting to see (if we ever do) how the
authorities at UEFA assess Mr Taylor's performance and how they
react to the behaviour of too many players and of many of those
on the benches.
>
--- End Quote ---
Personally none of the SYC shouts where 100% clear, no card was
fine, Matic equally could have had a SY.
The point about the corner, I really think VAR should be used in
these situations. Its a factual decision, that would improve the
game, stop wrong corners/ missed corners etc, which can lead to
goals. It takes about 30 seconds these days to set up a corner/
goal kick. It needs one look at a replay most of the time.
Whilst there might be some straightforward cases where VAR could
clear up a corner/goal kick very quickly, I'm not sure if it
would be beneficial to bring it in for this. What happens if the
striker was marginally offside before he had the shot? Does VAR
go back to that or just come in to award the corner? What about
if it should have been a throw-in right by the corner flag -
there have been some instances, such as Stoke with Rory Delap,
where they'd arguably have preferred that to a corner so do you
start checking throw-ins too?
Perhaps you could have something extra like allowing one
challenge per game to cover incidents currently out of VAR's
scope but I think it would need to be considered in detail, as
IFAB have too often unwittingly found out about the law of
unintended consequences.

I too hope Anthony is ok after these events, what he and his
family have gone through is disgusting, and sadly he is not the
first nor will he be the last I fear. The fact that both the
referee and the fourth official in this game (who will no doubt
offer great support), have been through the same thing in the
last few years, is really quite terrible, it is time uefa stood
up for there referees for once, instead of pandering to clubs
and people who do not have referees best interests at heart.

I know Taylor will be strong enough to get straight back out
there - no way this can of behaviour can be seen to ‘win’. I
just hope his family are ok.
The brass neck irony of Italian football in any way implying
bias or cheating from referees shouldn’t be lost on anyone,
given their shady history with referee appointments and
influencing decisions … it’ll be a long time before our refs
will take any lectures there!
Still waiting for UEFA to publicly condemn, as usual. Rosetti
should be holding a press conference sharpish to back the
officials completely and condemn the appalling behaviour in and
after the game.

I hope Anthony and his family are all ok today. I suspect for
him it was worse seeing his teenage daughter and wife being
abused. He comes across as very level headed so I don't think
he'll make any rash decisions about his future over it, he'll be
more focused on supporting his family. I know the PGMOL are
supporting them & hope that continues for as long as they need
them to and beyond.
BUT where is Roberto Rosetti? He should be all over the media
supporting his referee and condemning this behaviour. Yes there
will be investigations and he won't want to jeopardise them but
publicly standing by his referee and condemning referee abuse
will not jeopardise any investigation. Grow a pair Mr Rosetti...
Not that it will make an iota of difference but sending much
love and hugs to the Taylor family. The referee family stands
with and supports them.
Does anyone know how big the carpet is at UEFA ivory Towers?
