The refereeing team can be very proud of their performance.
It was one of those matches that can easily destroy a referee
but credit to Taylor for not allowing that to happen. Despite
the (correct) OFR, I think that he proved that he is rightly on
the very top of the Elite list.
The only negative of this final was Mourinho and his theatrics.
I really hope that UEFA deals with him properly.

I wonder what Mourinho would have said had Smalling's header at
the end of extra time dropped below the crossbar instead of onto
it....

And now for the other side of the story …
I watched the game on Italian TV and have been following
accounts in the Italian media, where the general view seems to
be that Mr Taylor had a very poor game and that he did indeed
lose the plot. Trying to navigate round Mourinho's customary
graceless hysterics and the natural sour grapes that come from a
defeat in these circumstances, I think the incidents that most
upset the Italians were:
1. The failure to give a penalty against Sevilla for handball;
2. The failure to issue a second caution to Rakitić and to
Lamela (and perhps not to show Lamela a red card for the clash
with Ibáñez);
3. The failure to spot that Bounou got his fingertips to a shot
from Belotti and hence to award a corner instead of a goal kick.
I also suspect that some blame Mr Taylor for awarding what is
perceived as an excessive amount of stoppage time, which, if so,
is distinctly unfair, although I'm not sure the world is ready
for 3-hour football matches.
Incident 3 was, I think, a mistake, though it is amazing how
much clearer such incidents become when you have seen several
replays, and in any case it was hardly a match-changing
incident. 1 and 2 could be put down to bias on the part of the
commentators, but it also reflects in my view different
expectations: the Italians tend to have a particularly severe
approach to handball (Irrati would have given the penalty!), and
they also tend to expect rather more cautions than would be
given elsewhere. A constant feature of the last World Cup
(where the Italians were disinterested observers!) was for a
foul to be followed by a confident prediction of a yellow card,
only for no yellow card to appear, and it seems that the
Italians are having trouble adjusting to the rather more
parsimonious use of cards currently favoured internationally.
It will be interesting to see (if we ever do) how the
authorities at UEFA assess Mr Taylor's performance and how they
react to the behaviour of too many players and of many of those
on the benches.

Personally none of the SYC shouts where 100% clear, no card was
fine, Matic equally could have had a SY.
The point about the corner, I really think VAR should be used in
these situations. Its a factual decision, that would improve the
game, stop wrong corners/ missed corners etc, which can lead to
goals. It takes about 30 seconds these days to set up a corner/
goal kick. It needs one look at a replay most of the time.

It most certainly wasn't a handball, even by the harsh standards
applied in Europe it wasn't even close. And I don't recall
seeing anything that ticked a box for a second caution. Yes,
Bono did get the faintest of touches on a shot, but it took
multiple replays to see it. And of course, the irony here is
had his forward got the shot on target they'd have a goal and no
need for a corner, pretty sure it was going wide even without
the touch.
The reports are that Mourinho had his rant by the officials
minibus, but it was also witnessed by Roberto Rosseti. They
really should be throwing a very thick and heavy book at him, he
has gone way too far this time. Although Sevilla shouldn't
escape sanctions, their behaviour wasn't a whole lot better.

Can't say what I really want to say or I will have to put myself
on moderated posts!
Paris is nice this time of year don't you think!?
On one of the videos of it I noticed Bogár Gergő stepping
in to try and calm things down. He was RLO. Amazingly talented
young ref and looked very calm and professional on the video.

I for one am sick of negative Italian tactics. The audacity to
make a meal of every challenge and complain when a referee waves
play on and argue over blatantly correct decisions. Also, the
ridiculous reaction of the Italian press when they are
continuously complaining about referees. UEFA get in such a bind
as to who to appoint to their games, so maybe italians should
start realising the problem might be them …
Italy is also now a bit of an outlier in terms of the laws. I
don’t see many Italian League games, but what they think is
handball just isn’t correct. They seem to think it’s like hockey
and feet, that somehow VAR is there to spot if the ball has hit
any arm, however accidentally.
Should also finally be a message to refs everywhere - soon as
Mourinho starts his antics (down the line at the AR, on the
field flapping his arms around) just give him a RC straight away
and have an easier rest of the game. You get no credit or
improvement by trying to manage / warn.
His conduct in the car park is outrageous and being so public
too, UEFA has to send a strong message out with a serious
punishment, on principle if nothing else.

Unfortunately it seems the Roma fans followed the lead of their
manager, which lead to some shocking scenes for Anthony and his
family at Budapest airport including what looks like a table
being thrown in his direction. Disgusting scenes and behaviour.

It’s disgusting behaviour, it really is. Mourinho should be
totally ashamed but his ego won’t allow for it.
I hope Anthony and family have all the support they need, both
back here and from UEFA.
