There’s times where there’s a genuine attempt to play the ball
and in those situations fine but there are incidents like in
this game where it’s done to if not injure to deliberately leave
one on the opponent and I don’t think it should be acceptable
but in todays game it is, if I had my way there’d be a lot I’d
change about the rules and enforcement but that’s not going to
happen

It seems to me that referees clearly know the wording of the
laws. However, both those who write the laws and those who apply
them seem to have little understanding as to what actually
constitutes a dangerous challenge and this particularly applies
to challenges to the head, which are treated incredibly lightly
in my view. Both Rugby codes are much stronger on penalising
challenges to the head and neck with automatic red cards for
most body to head contacts, and of course for challenges which
tip over the opponent so they land on their head / neck. Today
I saw a goalkeeper punch the neck of a forward as he then barged
into the back of that forward whilst the ball was several feet
away - no foul was given and there was no referral from VAR to
review the challenge. Will it take a fatality or paralysing
injury to bring about change? Said goalkeeper has previous for
injuring a player causing a very long period of being unfit to
play. In both incidents not even a foul was given.

today. Another situation when you wonder what the point of VAR
is.
