One of those games where opinions of the referee's performance
will vary significantly.
If UEFA want minimal use of cards particularly in the early
stages as long as the referee doesn't lose control, then I guess
they will be satisfied with the overall performance of Dias.
For some of us though, it's hard to understand how Carvajal,
Silva in the first half, and probably Rodri didn't get YCs. I
felt he either stretched leniency to the limit or simply missed
or misread some challenges.
There were times when the game threatened to boil over and yet
Dias didn't lose control. To what extent that was due to his
game management or to the restraint of most of the players, or a
combination of both, is hard to tell. It was certainly a
visible strong warning he gave to Carvajal and Grealish after
their second altercation, not having done so after the shove
into the boards and the reaction.
I've not seen a lot of that referee so I don't know if that is
his normal approach to what was a very high profile game. I'm
in the betwixt and between camp frankly. A curates's egg
performance? Improved after half time? Overall, I don't think
it was nearly as bad as some have stated, but I'm not sure I
would class it as good. But probably ok from a UEFA
perspective.

Uncomfortable with the referee's performance but I come from the
viewpoint that you stamp on bad fouls and continue to do so in
the hope that player's behaviour improves. The game appears to
have changed, there is a greater emphasis on managing a
situation, to keep 11 v 11. Some of the spirefullness, pettiness
and exagaration in the modern game is alienating people like me
but it is becoming the norm and referees are mandated to ignore
it by FIFA. So Soares did what he had to do and a fair result
ensued following 2 great strikes.
However I will never get used to boots down the back of
someone's heel or a violent charge into touch, I.e. let the
player you are there sort of thing.

What are people’s views in general about shoving into the
hoardings incidents ? I feel it’s an often unnecessary action
and potentially dangerous (maybe less so at top level stadia)
but it seems to be accepted as part of the game.

I can never accept pushing into hoardings but increasingly
people say it is part of the excitement and it is what
spectators love too see. IMHO it is not a Roman amphitheatre
involving gladiators and slaves fighting but it is gladiatorial
in the sense of encouraging aggression and violence. God knows
there is enough in society and if players cannot control
themselves, or indeed managers, what hope is there?
Someone will get hurt and I dislike giving cards out based on
the outcome or seriousness of the injury (ignoring play
acting!). Cards should be given based on action of player doing
the pushing.
Just my opinion of course.

Totally unnecessary and very dangerous, in my view. You only
have to look at the well documented case of Bath City's Alex
Fletcher who was in a coma and had to have brain surgery
following a collision with advert hoardings, although he wasn't
pushed (it was his own momentum that caused his unfortunate but
devastating collision). Players at all levels would do well to
think of the potential consequences of any such actions.

Having been overlooked as one of UEFA’s on on-field referees at
the recent World Cup I was a little surprised to see Dias being
appointed to such a high profile game (yes I know he’s
experienced, Elite etc).

The obvious translation, counting the stars, would be "push"
though why that should not be used in its native form just adds
to the mystery. Ref Fan prefers the synonym "shove" and my BLFG
might have used "dunt".
I doubt whether that has taken us much further but your question
hasn't been ignored!
