       Michael Oliver Forest v Southampton
   DIR By: Deanspen

Following Leicester v Everton last Monday and Forest v
Southampton tonight it seems that Michael Oliver on the face of
it is the preferred official to referee a relegation “battle”.
I’m sure there is a message there somewhere to others on the
       list.

I would imagine that's partly because he's unlikely to referee
any team in the Champions League battle (in which Newcastle are
a part), which does narrow down the games he can get, and he's
hardly likely to be used on a game with nothing riding on it.

       Flawless once again from Oliver.
Definite penalty against Maitland-Nile’s after chopping through
       the Forest player.

Looking ahead, could Newcastle's emergence as a major force
prove to be a major hindrance to Michael Oliver's career?

I can understand why he gave that, but it’s not a penalty for
me. Attacker has initiated the contact.
At no point is Johnson in possession of the ball, and he’s
pretty much on the ground when the tackle is made. He’s just
stretched as far as he can to make sure he gets in the way of
AMN trying to kick the ball.
I fully support penalties being given in those scenarios when
the attacker is quicker and moves the ball away from the
defender with a realistic chance of getting it, but that didn’t
feel like one of those occasions. I might add that it’s both
clever from Johnson and a distinct lack of awareness from AMN
       mind you.

It shouldn't do - especially as I don't think Newcastle will go
on to be as dominant as Man City. Even if they do, he can look
at Felix Brych, from Munich who has had a very fine career, even
though he can't referee the biggest team in Germany.

Oliver had another very good match, he kets the game flow but
still stamps his authority on it. Only questionable thing for me
was the penalty given to Southampton in the dying minutes looked
very soft to me at best.

It seems, not just in this match, as if a very high bar hasn't
been set when it comes to determining what is a foul in respect
       of penalties.

Oliver has been really poor lately. Giving out far too many
penalties. Neither should have been given yesterday

I think the situation has been a bit exaggerated at times -
Oliver has refereed Manchester United, Liverpool and Brighton in
PL since March international break so it's not as if he's being
completely kept away from CL contenders.
He refereed Man City V Arsenal a few weeks ago so that will have
limited title matches he can get either side of that a bit and
relegation has seemed closer than Top 4 for a while so it makes
sense for them to use one of their best referees for games like
Leicester V Everton and Nottingham Forest V Southampton.
