A MARRINER - Brighton v Man U

The usual non fussy officiating we get from Marriner.
Both cards fully justified so far and he’s stayed well in the
background and tried to played advantage.

I feel like he's not had so many game this season? I really like
Marriner as a ref, be sad to see him retire :(

Excellent tonight Marriner. Brilliant performance, one of the
best I have seen all season.
YC all correct (Dunk Slightly harsh) and Casemiro lucky to not
get a second
Excellent VAR call from Madley for shaw playing volleyball

Agreed - and Shaw and Casemiro. Could have ended with 8 players
to be honest

Marriner has a cool, sensible style about him which I like but
recently I have not been so convinced about some of his decision
making / foul detection even allowing for the greater tolerance
for contact. That said, I would have no problem with him
refereeing any game - he has had a fine career.
No seeing the handball, was it a yellow car offence, i.e. a
second for Shaw?

I have always been a fan of Andre Marriner, ever since I first
saw him, many years ago, refereeing a very tricky Brighton v.
Millwall match. If I am being critical, though, I don't think
that yesterday showed him at his best. The style was pleasantly
unfussy, as expected, but I would agree with other posters that
some of his foul detection was a little unconvincing. Several
bouts of simulation were not punished as they might have been -
attempts to obtain unjustified penalties, notably by Mitoma and
Rashford fell rightly on deaf ears - but no other sanction was
applied. The Rashford dive in the first half was simply
embarrassing, and warranted a YC for being so unconvincing, if
nothing else. A RC for Antony seemed justifiable, as well as a
second YC for Shaw.
I should also like to have seen a YC shown to Weghorst for yet
again attempting mind-games prior to a penalty kick. There was
absolutely no reason why he should have entered the penalty area
in the circumstances. It didn't appear to me that any warning,
let alone sanction was given to him.
So, whilst I still rate Andre Marriner very highly, I don't
think that this performance would be among the finest of his
long career. I still hope to see him again before he retires,
though.

This cannot be a yellow card. There are three offences for
which a yellow card can be given for handball: attempting (but
failing) to prevent a goal from being scored, scoring or
attempting to score, or stopping a promising attack. The first
two clearly don't apply in this case. The third is not relevant
because the the promising attack was restored by the penalty
award. It is very, very difficult to give a correct yellow card
when a penalty has been awarded.
