Well, the call has come again, and JCFC has answered it. It
remains to be seen, however, whether it will be possible to
attend any matches.

I have a ticket for each of the first two matches, so unless La
Sturgeon intervenes once more, I should be able to see a couple
of games at least.

Having obtained tickets for three matches, I hoped to be able to
watch one of the referees not previously seen, but given that
these can be counted on the digits of one hand, this was
unsurprisingly not to be. That said, when the appointments were
listed, I was delighted with the first, pleased with the second,
but unhappy with the third, for reasons that will become
apparent.
As promised elsewhere, the season began at Ainslie Park for
Friday 9th July 2021
Premier Sports Cup
Edinburgh City 0 v 1 Hamilton Academical
Craig Napier; David McGeachie, Steven MacDonald.
Getting into the ground was not without its problems, the
gentleman scanning the ticket being even less technologically
adept than the writer. The PA announcement of the teams gave
first names to home players and the officials, Accies merely
receiving a curt surname. City play in black and white, Accies
in red and white, but when the teams emerged, one was in gold,
the other in black and blue., leaving this spectator none the
wiser. The officials ended up in pea green which was not too bad
at short range, but somehow looked toxic from a distance.
The first free-kick came after just two seconds, but that did
not prove representative of the match as a whole. On 25 minutes
the blues took the lead and it turned out at this point that
they were Hamilton. City came close five minutes later, a
free-kick just clearing the crossbar. A City defender received a
yellow card for taking down an opponent off the ball and the
home keeper managed to tip the ball over for a corner before
half-time arrived.
He repeated the feat two minutes into the second half from an
overhead kick. City got in a fankle when a defender tried to
head away a ball that the keeper had come to catch, but another
defender saved the day with a header off the line.There was a
yellow card for an Accies man on 80 minutes, and in time added
City had a great chance but were denied by the Hamilton
keeper'sl leg.
It was the first time that Dr Napier had been seen since he
reached Category 1. He appears to have mellowed somewhat and put
in a very good performance. He allowed plenty of physical
contact and play was kept moving, with barely a word of
complaint from the players. His good bedside manner was
confirmed on the one occasion when a player did approach him
with a query, as both were chuckling when their brief
conversation ended. He was on the receiving end of countless
punches at the end, fortunately in lieu of handshakes. His
movement is remarkable, with rapid sprints when required, and an
excellent reverse gear over considerable distances. Curiously,
having got where he wanted to be, he would employ a purposeful
walk, rather than the more usual gentle jog. It is no secret
that I have a high regard for Dr Napier and this match provided
no reason to amend that opinion .

Three of the scheduled ties could not be played because of
Covid, but fortunately there were no such problems with
Saturday 10th July 2021

Cowdenbeath 0 v 1 Raith Rovers
Gavin Duncan; David Roome, George King.
With time to spare, I decided to invest £3 in acquiring a
Brazilian. It proved aesthetically pleasing - smooth and glossy
- but could not be inspected too closely within the confines of
the stand, the contents being too small for my ageing eyes. I
shall read it later.
Mr Duncan last crossed my path nine years ago, when still a
Category 1D, making a good job of a match at Ochilview between
East Stirlingshire and Berwick Rangers when both were still in
the Scottish League. Mr Roome had fared less well in a Junior
match at Neilston, when he had appeared rather insipid, but he
h_as progressed well since his transition to Specialist
Assistant and he now wears the coveted white badge. Mr King was
new to me, but one wonders how often in his career a dodgy
decision has been described as The Madness of no such
problems today, however.
After just 5 minutes, a Raith attacker ran into a defender and
fell to the ground clutching his (untouched) face. Mr Duncan
dismissively waved to him to get up, which to nobody's surprise
he was able to do unscathed. Mercifully there was no further
nonsense of that sort, the benefit of getting the first call
right. Raith was the stronger side and on 21 minutes the home
keeper could only get a fingertip to a shot from the corner of
the penalty area and it flew into the net. Raith continued to
have the better of things, with Cowdenbeath rarely threatening.
Raith began the second half where they left off, but when their
attacker beat his defender and ran clear into the box, he put
his shot just the wrong side of the upright. Eventually
Cowdenbeath began to create the odd chance, a good effort being
touched over by the Raith keeper while a splendidly worked
chance was missed from close in.
The pitch is surrounded by a racing track and neither distance
nor the array of giant tyres added enchantment to the view. It
had not been the most exciting of games - no VAR, no cards, no
wrecks and nobody drownded, but that should not detract from Mr
Duncan's work, which was very sound in a match which, the first
hurdle successfully cleared, did not test him greatly - on!y two
players received the briefest of lectures. I will be happy to
see him again - which is just as well, as having waited nine
years to see Mr Duncan again, it turns out that he will be in
charge of Tuesday's game as well.

Perhaps if I said that Cowdenbeath are affectionately known
(well by Ron Fergusson at least) as the Blue Brazil then you
could knock a few m's off?

I know times are tough but the thought of waxing or blow drying
going on in a stand somewhere was concerning! [emoji15]

Tomorrow's home team, Clyde are known as The Bully Wee, so
goodness knows what their programme is called.
