How boring of them. I would have hoped that they might have
invented a Woolly Bee mascot.

Apologies to JCFC I clicked sad when I meant to click funny and
have only just noticed. As a general rule I try to avoid
clicking negative symbols, I think they are particularly useless
without an explanation or justification; so unless a story deals
with a really sad situation I would try to avoid clicking on
sad.
My BLFG has now explained, in terms that a refined Girvanite
would use, what is understood by a Brazillian in terms of a
beauty treatment - I hasten to add that she doesn't speak from
personal experience.

Worry not, Microscopist. I would answer readily to "sad old
git."
I agree about the negative symbols, which seem suddenly to have
been used much more frequently than in the past, providing
neither entertainment nor enlightenment.

I watched Hearts v Cove tonight on the TV, thought Colin Steven
had a decent but untesting 90 minutes, he seemed to have been
watching Brych, Lahoz, Kuipers et al on the TV as I thought he
delivered a similar lenient game and tried not to resort to
cards.
Looking forward to seeing the 'Well tomorrow, sadly also on
Premier Sports. I've also decided not to venture to the home
league cup games due to bowling commitments meaning I couldn't
make the full 90 minutes and didn't want to deprive my fellow
'Well fans a seat but hoping for an in game return at the Hibs
game on 1st August.

I too could not get a ticket to the match at Firhill, which
means that I shall have to make a longer and more expensive trip
to Gayfield and may have to miss the closing minutes.

The uphill walk from Croy station took this old codger rather
longer than the advertised 20 minutes, but I was still an early
arrival for
Tuesday 13th July 2021
Premier Sports Cup
Clyde 1 v 0 Stranraer
Gavin Duncan; George King, Brent Falconer.
This was just my second visit to a Clyde home game, the previous
one having been when they were still at Shawfield, fifty years
ago. Broadwood is a definite improvement! It disappointed in one
respect however: there were no refreshments available, which was
unfortunate as I had skipped lunch in anticipation of a pie. The
stand faced the bright sun, meaning that those foolish virgins
who had not come prepared with a Brighouse Town baseball cap
spent long periods holding their hands to their eyes. My lesser
problem came from the opposite direction, the sun reflecting
strongly off the shiny head of the old gentleman two rows in
front.
The match itself was no great shakes, occasional moments of
skill punctuating some pretty dreadful football. Clyde's goal
came on 23minutes from a Goodwillie penalty. Almost immediately
a good pass put the Stranraer striker in, but the keeper dived
to turn a strong shot for a corner. A further corner award a few
minutes later meant that for the rest of the half and beyond,
the local intelligentsia gave Mr King the benefit of their
opinions. There was a yellow for the home number 4 for a
mistimedtackle. Just before the break Mr Duncan, who had had a
word with the Stranraer boss earlier, raced to the technical
area and produced a yellow card, followed within five seconds by
another and its consequent red. Ten seconds later it was
half-time.
Stranraer.created a good chance early in the second half, put
pushed the shot tamely wide. The previously booked home number 4
was perhaps lucky not to leave early when he pulled back an
opponent to stop an attack. Possibly Mr Duncan had come to the
conclusion that none of the attacks could be considered
promising. Number 4did in fact leave early, being wisely subbed a
couple of minutes later. The Stranraer number received a yellow
card for atrip. More poor passes continued to go astray, decent
ones led to woeful finishing, with Stranraer possibly the better
side, but unable to make it count. There may or may not have
been a yellow for a Clyde player on 85 minutes - Mr Duncan was
writing for some time, but maybe he was sending a postcard to
Great-Aunt Jessie. There definitely was one in added time.
The four days interval saw a very different Mr Duncan emerge -
was there an Observerr present? It was doubtless just the
approach of the teams, who were not above going down easily, but
there were far more interruptions to play. I was less convinced
by his triage of offences, but then he was much closer, as well
as better qualified to judge.

A morning spent wrestling with Acme Thunderer's puzzle, a
lunchtime train trip and a long afternoon and early evening
enjoying the sun and sea air from a seat on the prom - such was
the prelude to
Wednesday 14th July 2021
Premier Sports Cup
Arbroath. 2 v 0 East Five.
Steven Reid; Gary Hilland, Keiran Trayner.
Mr Reid had been seen twice before. On the first occasion he and
Calum Haswell might have fallen foul of an Observer, had there
been one, for failing to spot for several minutesthat the corner
flag contraptions on one side were not in position. The second
was a sectional cup final, which he handled well, with just one
slight caveat, of which more anon.
When an Arbroath player was injured and had to be replaced on 24
minutes, it dawned on me that my notebook page remained blank.
Four minutes later the Arbroath right winger went flying under
an attempted tackle: Mr Hilland flagged, the offender waved his
arms at all and sundry, but to no avail as the yellow card was
already in Mr Reid's hand. Play resumed and continued till the
break at the end of a half that had been pleasant enough to
watch, but with little real excitement.
Arbroath missed a good chance on 53 minutes; their boss, the one
that carried the greater weight, both literally and
metaphorically, grew restive and on the hour Mr Hilland was
given the task of dealing with a quadruple Arbroath
substitution. This brightened things up and a good long shot
soon hadthe visitors' keeper leaping to turn the ball for a
corner. On 70 minutes an East Five forward raced clear, the
Arbroath keeper ran out to tackle him, failed and grabbed hold
of him to bring him down. Mr Reid took his time, his hand to his
earpiece suggesting that he was consulting Mr Hilland as to
whether the offence was inside the area or just outside. It was
the latter, so the card for the keeper was red. As he rounded
the keeper the player had been briefly heading towards the
corner of the box, but with control of the ball and an unguarded
net the decision was correct. The weighty boss turned to his
reserve keeper, who had to point out that they had already used
their full quota of replacements, so a midfielder had to go in
goal. The free-kick did not trouble him, being sent soaring in
the direction of Pleasreland. The reserve keeper raced round
behind the goal to offer advice; Mr Reid was not happy and
called him back; the reserve simply hopped over the wall onto
the empty terrace, but was eventually persuaded to return to
base. Things looked bad for Arbroath, but within three minutes a
good counter-attack gave them the lead. There was an odd moment
when an Arbroath clearance brushed an opponent, did not go into
touch as looked likely, but went out at the far end and Mr Reid
gave a goal kick. Mr Hilland clearly could not flag from the
other half, but two home players indicated his comms.
Nevertheless the goal-kick stood. The 83rd minute brought a
yellow card for the East Fife number 20, for kicking the ball
away when caught offside. The Fifers rolled a shot just wide,
but it was the home side who added a second in added time, a
strong header from an excellent cross. Just before this there
had been a dispute over who should receive the drop ball and
before the restart Mr Hilland had to intervene in an argument
between weighty manager and angry bearded East Fife boss. When
play restarted the less weighty boss, who seemed a model of
calmness strolled over to offer an olive bran h, but was
forcefully rebuffed by the bearded one.
Mr Reid set his stall out with a couple of early free-kicks, but
then relaxed and let the play flow. He did have a tendency to
look for an advantage when there was clearly no prospect of one,
which possibly gave an impression of hesitancy or even going on
the shout. Nevertheless, he handled the game well, though
without, for me, the element of stardust. Mr Trayner, on the far
line, always had a broad grin when he came within range; Former
Category 1 Mr Hilland was both chatty and cheerful throughout;
Mr Reid seems to have a more serious and reserved persona. The
caveat mentioned before was the question ""Does he ever smile?"
Well, he did briefly with the jocular home bosses, while
waiting for their opponents to come out for the second half, but
rarely if at all during the play.
The last train back to Glasgow was at 21.54, changing at
Edinburgh and arriving at 00.36. Arriving at the station, I and
others found that this was cancelled. The gentleman at scotrail
rustled up 2 taxis to come from Dundee and take us to Perth.
There the four of us were transferred to a large coach and we
were back in Glasgow just over five minutes late. Well done
scotrail -and especially their man on the helpline.

Perhaps if I said that Cowdenbeath are affectionately known
(well by Ron Fergusson at least) as the Blue Brazil then you
could knock a few m's off?
[/quote]
Coincidentally, and presumably not inspired by JCFC's visit, the
Pitlochry Festival and Lyceum Online (the Royal Lyceum Theatre
Edinburgh) this weekend a features a play loosely based on Ron
Ferguson's book "Black Diamonds and the Blue Brazil" – Coal,
Cowdenbeath and Football dreams of glory.

Starting to read Ron Ferguson's book I note that the Blue
Brazilian cost 50p in 1993, from the picture it didn't look
smooth and glossy though!
