I find Klopp's behaviour in front of John Brooks was disgusting
and sadly not atypical of him.
I have always understood that a handshake is a symbol of respect
so not sure I would wish to shake hands with someone who had
shown such disrespect to a colleague.

Now I believe Klopp is making insinuations about Tierney without
saying anything specific. That's called a smear and reflects
badly on Klopp.

and I've seen many others get sent off for a lot less

I have not commented on this site for some time and likely will
not do so again. There are many fantastic posters on here but I
have become a little disillusioned with the lack of even the
smallest amount impartiality some posters are able to muster
when commenting on the performance of a referee who officiates a
match involving the team they support.
I felt compelled, however, to comment on this thread, as I felt
that today summed up everything wrong with Premier League
refereeing. Let me start by saying that I place little blame on
Paul Tierney and John Brooks, I think they are only doing what
their bosses want. In a sense, I don't even place full blame on
Mr. Klopp, yes his behavior (like many, if not most managers)
towards officials is appalling but nothing has been put in place
in terms of deterrent by the league for this type of action.
Likewise for players, it seems that screaming the face of
officials and generally behaving like children (and that is an
insult to most children) is ok in the Premier League.
I think that there were two incidents of SFP today. One from
each team. I also think that in neither case would the Premier
League like referees to actually apply the laws. So I cannot
blame Mr. Tierney. After Liverpool's final goal, a fantastic
piece of skill, Mr. Klopp's first reaction was to run to the 4th
official John Brooks, stand close to him, and appear to scream
in his face. This action is totally unacceptable by any measure,
there is absolutely no justification. It should have been met
with a red card from the referee and a lengthy suspension from
the authorities. This is not passion, it is abuse. His team had
scored. He was more interested in abusing the officials than
celebrating with his players and fans. Again though, I feel I
cannot blame Mr. Brooks. He likely wants a lengthy career.
In terms of Mr. Tierney refusing to shake Mr. Klopp's hand,
which I did not personally see, I agree with Whistleblower. I
personally like to always shake hands with everyone at the end
of a match however, I can understand being reluctant to shake
the hand of someone who has treated you with no respect during
the game appears to be further dissenting in the aftermath.
Two final points - Firstly, the Tottenham coach should also have
been dismissed, however his actions pale compared to Klopp's
disrespect. Secondly, on the idea that Mr. Tierney may have
spoken out of turn when cautioning Mr. Klopp, there is no
evidence for this, other than an insinuation from Mr. Klopp
which one could see as deliberately vague so as to stoke up
conspiratorial ire among fans towards the referee. All
conversations are recorded so the PGMOL will know soon. To
complain about a referee's speech, publicly, then refuse to say
what was actually said, to me at least, seems rather suspect and
not in any way helpful.
I am sure that Liverpool fans will say that I am attacking their
team. I can assure them that I do not support any Premier League
team, nor any soccer team at all. I am only interested in
officiating. I would also hope that long time contributors,
while not always agreeing with my comments, will know that I
also post in as fair a manner as I can.
My final comment is that Premier League refereeing is in a very
poor state. Referees are not truly referees anymore but occasion
managers. Every attempt seems to be made to tolerate poor
behavior of players both in terms of foul play and the constant
abuse of officials. It seems it is the desire of the powers that
be that 22 players be kept on the pitch, almost at all costs. I
am not sure who is served by this approach but I don't feel it
is working and I don't think it will end well. I wish all
referees the very best and hope that they, collectively, will
change their approach.

PGMOL Statement
“PGMOL is aware of the comments made by Jurgen Klopp after his
side’s fixture with Tottenham Hotspur. Match officials in the
Premier League are recorded in all games via a communications
system and having fully reviewed the audio of referee Paul
Tierney from today’s fixture, we can confirm he acted in a
professional manner throughout including when issuing the
caution to the Liverpool manager so, therefore, we strongly
refute any suggestion that Tierney’s actions were improper.”
FA is aware of the details.

Two clear red card incidents missed by Coote on VAR. Consdering
he missed Van Dijk and Pickford and Lo Celso on Azpilicueta it’s
no surprise, useless official.
In the buildup to spurs third goal, clear foul on Salah missed
(var it the other way) then wrongly booked Milner
One thing I will say is I reckon Tierney did say something he
shouldn’t have done. It’s unusual to react the way Klopp has if
he hadn’t. Didn’t book Ryan Mason who didn’t do much worse.
Controversy seems to follow Tierney around, especially in
Liverpool games

So that's 2 Liverpool players who have now avoided a 3 match ban
this season for SFP where VAR hasn't got involved and
recommended an OFR.

Good to see you posting again Dublinref. The site certainly
benefits from the quality of posters like you so I certainly
hope you will return at some point in the future.
I wonder if there would be merit in PGMO releasing audio between
Tierney and Klopp. It would obviously be unusual and you could
say would create a precedent but Webb has said transparency is
important to him and if the PGMO are happy with what Tierney
said then it might help to resolve the situation in a way
releasing a statement might not. You could obviously argue it
shouldn't become a public matter just to try and appease
critics.
I don't know what exactly happened with the handshakes. As a
general point I understand Whistleblower's comments but I'm not
sure it would be a good idea in general for a referee to decide
not to shake someone's hand. If things are that bad, eg. the
referee has concern for their safety at the time, then they
should probably be disciplining them at the time.
I imagine Klopp will be charged for his post-match comments.

Well said DublinRef. Premier League reflects society in a way
where generally bad behaviour is deemed acceptable and nothing
is done or no-one stands up to it. There does appear to be a
trend to keep 11 players on each side on the pitch - how many
times do we see clear yellow cards offences not penalised when a
player is already on a yellow card? Tierney et al may well be
under pressure to reduce the number of red cards in an era where
behaviour is getting worse. We do not know. What I personally do
know is that behaviour at football matches is getting worse,
confrontational, cynical, unsporting. Now we no longer know what
is acceptable and the FA need to make a statement about what is
and isn't acceptable and empower referees to take action and
accept that more red cards may be given. I do not accept that
the pressures on managers and players is so great that outbursts
like this are acceptable. Strong deterrents and their
enforcement is what is required.
