IIRC only a select few on SG2 are full time referees if I’m
wrong then none of the SG2 referees are full time

You are wrong. I know it's hard to believe in some cases, but
they mostly earn a living from being a SG2 referee.

at this level were full time which I assume means just that - so
how is it possible for Mr Whitestone to be employed by The Met ?

SG1 refs are now all full time
SG2 refs are mostly full time but a couple are part time still -
including Dean Whitestone
League 1 & 2 refs - none are full time and have other jobs.
It is widely known that Dean Whitestone doesn't want to give up
his job in the Met and understandably so hence why despite being
good enough, imo at least, is unlikely to ever be a SG1 ref.

On reflection you may have decided to employ another verb than
'earn' m'learned friend for some of the SG2 cohort who I think
are no better and in some cases worse than the practitioners in
Leagues 1 and 2. There are some good referees in SG2,
Whitestone among them, but there are others whose preferment is
more baffling.

Not everyone was in a position to go full time, so they had a
choice of force demoting potentially some of the best referees
or letting them carry on part time. I suspect the criteria for
being promoted now to SG2 is to go full time, but don't see why
someone who wasn't able to should lose their position, it will
just sort itself out over time.

Doesn't Gillett combine his refereeing with his work at
Liverpool University?
If the system is preventing some of the best referees from
getting promoted then I think it is flawed. I can understand
that in many cases a referee would benefit from being able to
make refereeing their sole focus and being able to earn
sufficiently from that rather than them for instance needing to
devote considerable time and energy to a relatively low paid job
that they don't really enjoy or gain anything from.
But I don't think a referee wishing to combine refereeing with
something else should prevent a referee from making progress in
refereeing should they be at the required level to gain
promotion.
