Wrexham v Notts County - Scott Tallis
DIR By: UmpireIan49

The promotion decider in the National League served up an
absolutely belting game with a dramatic finish, Wrexham holding
on by 3-2.
I thought Scott Tallis had an excellent game in a powder keg
atmosphere. He sanctioned appropriately, called the big
decisions correctly and was always in control. Great spot for
the Notts County penalty at the end, the penalty being saved to
the delight of the home crowd. There were some debatable offside
calls by the assistants, but Mr. Tallis can hardly be blamed for
those.
Now a word to the wise…..don’t take too much notice of football
pundits. Adam Virgo on BT Sport said the referee never had
control and got very little right……I did wonder the game he was
watching and the game I was watching were one and the same
thing. I just wish the pundits deal with facts and not telling
us what we should be seeing. That’s the only gripe of what was a
fantastic advert for non league football.

Very fair description of the game. I thought given the
circumstances he had a very good game. I did feel his Assistants
didn’t quite match his performance with more than one
questionable offside decision. Good game to watch especially the
second half. Thought a draw would probably been fair but County
missed that chance with Foster’s penalty save

I don't think you'll get a more difficult game than that play
off finals aside. There was so much riding on it. I thought his
decision for the penalty at the end was a good indicator of his
performance, calm, assured and gave himself time to think. No
referee is truly going to be able to 'control' a game like that.
Well done Scott.

This was always going to be a tough game to referee and whilst
there were plenty of positives (e.g. fitness, positioning,
sanctions), I think there were some issues / points for
consideration:
Penalty not awarded to Wrexham for a push by the NC4 on W10. I
think this was clear.
Question mark over the first Wrexham goal and a possible foul on
the defender (although on balance I think it was probably
correct to award the goal - there was nothing conclusive to show
a foul)
I am not sure who has seen the handball and have a feeling there
might have been input from one of the other officials to get the
decision correct. You can see the referee moving backwards away
from the penalty area after the incident / as the ball starts to
break which wouldn’t be the natural movement if the handball had
been seen. That said, the most important thing of course is that
the officiating team have got the decision correct.
As mentioned by others, some debatable offside decisions from
the ARs.
Overall, I think the team will be pleased that the focus of
discussion after the match is on what a great game of football
it was and not on them.

Adam Virgo is stealing a living as a commentator/pundit in my
opinion.
He speaks absolute drivel and is just awful to listen to.
As such I would say his comments probably reinforce that the
referee had a decent afternoon!

Can we expect this referee to be on National List for 2023/24 ?

Would like to think the appointments people would have picked
their best man for this particular match, wouldn't you ?

Didn’t see the full game but one thing I observed that he went
back a lot so didn’t make a lot of quick movements towards the
penalty area so always looked far from an incident

In fairness, although, being at my team's fixture, I didn't see
this one this has generally been a pretty poor year for NL
Referee performances.
When I've seen him live Mr Tallis has been one of the better
ones but there's been some absolutely appalling performances
from some others.
I believe that some of last season's 2Bs may have been promoted
a tad early to fill spaces left by a few years of excellent
performers being promoted to the National List.

Couldn't agree more. Having watched fairly regular National
League matches for two seasons now, the gap between the best and
the worst is absolutely immense. Many are encountering full-time
professional football for the first time and seem ill-prepared
for it.
