For all the neutrals (and I am one) you can certainly understand
why Brighton should feel very poorly done to. Dreadful.

There is also the angle shown on MOTD2 where it came off
MacAllister’s hip. If VAR sees this they have to allow the goal.

Better before might be stretching it a bit, but you could say it
was slightly less of a shambles than it was now!
Webb seems very much above criticism on here, but his
performance as a manager of his team so far had not got off to
the best of starts and there are parallels here with a team
having a new manager coming in half way through a season and
that manager failing to get his new tactics implemented straight
away. The question is, is it Webb failing to get his message
across or are his team incapable of actioning it, I suppose time
will tell.

Seems clear and obvious to me that VARs are finding it difficult
to decide what a clear and obvious error is. I know we don't
want matches to be rerefereed but I feel it might be better now
if the VAR makes a judgment based on 'do I think the onfield
referee would have given a penalty if he'd had the view I've
just had ?' If yes then call the referee to the screen. I
can't claim that would be a magic answer but can't be much worse
than where we are now.
At some stage we need to deal with grappling at set pieces. I'm
sure when VAR was being developed I read that it would eliminate
shirt pulling etc at set pieces and I think it should be doing a
lot more about this. We seemed to have filed dealing with such
offences in the same bin as goalkeepers holding onto the ball
for too long.

Problem is that leaves you with 14 referees (with Harrington
seemingly out) to cover 20 appointments (10 on field and 10 VAR,
not to mention they may need a couple as 4th officials for the
biggest games). Even if you bring in SG2, that still leaves you
with not much availability should anyone else become
unavailable.

Interesting comments on RefWatch about all 4 controversial
incidents, especially the first no-penalty decision. There was
general agreement that it was the wrong decision and VAR should
have intervened and advised an OFR. But as Dermot pointed out,
Stuart Attwell gave the 'cutting grass' sign (which he said was
quite unusual) making it clear to players and fans he had seen
it and it was definitely no penalty. So what is a VAR supposed
to do in those circumstances? In this case, it was a relatively
new PL referee on VAR and a FIFA referee onfield. Attwell seem
to have a clear view with a good angle and no obstructing
players in his eyeline. I have some sympathy with VAR in the
circumstances, less with Stuart Attwell.

Agree. If you ask Attwell to have an OFR review, you are pretty
much calling him wrong - which is very different from being
unsighted, or not having the best viewing angle. Also, the
personnel dynamics are at play here - although probably only
subconsciously.
Probably best to consign the "cutting grass" signal to the
history books. Can we have the "proper" advantage signal back
in its place?

Oh yes please! I hate the one handed thing - can never tell if
it's an advantage being played or not!
