G Scott - Leicester vs Aston Villa

I was looking forward to having Scott in charge, recently he has
been a safe pair of hands.
Alas today was a thoroughly inept performance.
Foul detection was random at best. Missed cautions for Ramsey (5
first half fouls), Moreno and Young (for a foul which could have
been argued was SFP - studs into the ankle of Barnes).
Correct caution for Castagne for making the ‘card’ gesture,
however then forgot to caution Moreno for the actual foul!
First caution for Dewsbury-Hall correct, the second caution was
a baffling decision. Gave himself no time to think and made a
rash call.
Caution for Faes correct.
Then the worst of it in additional time. Firstly, he blew his
whistle following a 50:50 challenge between a Leicester player
and Villa player, then just stood and did nothing, no signal. To
make matters worse, he then gave the decision to Villa only to
be overruled by AR1!
After clearly losing complete control of the game, he gave a
penalty to Leicester shortly after this incident. Not a clue
what he saw here and thankfully was overturned by VAR.
Sad to see, but completely out of his depth today.

Oh no. Sad to hear. Unfortunately he's not in favour and if he's
not going to retire then maybe a demotion is best. His recent
high profile 4O appts tell me he may be on his farewell tour :(

Scott was an ok referee 5 years ago. He is very lucky to still
be SG1. He is just poor.
He is a lot fitter than Lee Mason, Mike Dean and John Moss but
he is no longer able to keep up. Correct on the two yellows and
a red but it looked like he only gave them after Ashley Young
protested.
The penalty call was just a dreadful guess. He got caught flat
footed and then had zero viewing angle. He just guessed, it was
a stinker. And some people want VAR gone!

Very unfortunate, I actually think he’s gone under the radar for
the past 18 months as a more than capable referee. But today
reminded me of Lee Mason in his final few games before
retirement.
He’s clearly overthinking every decision and he had no match
control at all today.

First of all i wouldnt say i have seen all the game or all the
incidents you refer to.
If you were to look at his match appointments (or the amount he
receives in the premier league) over the last few seasons it may
give a perception.
The last time i saw him live was when villa lost to stevenage in
the fa cup third round and i thought he had a reasonably good
game.
Does committing 5 fouls in a half of a game warrant a yellow
card for persistent infringement i would say it depends on what
the fouls were and how the game was being managed.
With ref to you saying a foul by young was possible sfp, then
var would have checked that, not that they can recommend a
yellow card.
Cautioning for waving the imaginery card is applauded, perhaps
he didnt intend to caution Moreno so couldnt have forgotten to
(the way games are managed nowadays i am not sure what is a
cautionable offence).
First caution of Dewsbury Hall i would agree was correct and i
can see why the second caution was issued fairly quickly, it
wasnt a good challenge to make already on a yellow card
especially when he was about to be substituted.
I can see why Scott from his position thought a penalty kick
should be awarded to Leicester for handball against Watkins, the
var was correct to ask Scott to review and see other angles
which showed Daka fouled Watkins before he handled.

Agree with your point re 5 fouls equalling a caution is always
subjective. Over a whole game I think it’s manageable, in one
half for me it should be a caution. 3 would be a little word in
the ear, 4 a final warning. i do accept that this is a matter of
opinion.
I would assume the Young foul was checked, I’m not saying it was
SFP, just that it may have been perceived that way due to the
nature of the challenge. It was the classic, misplaced pass so
trying to make amends situation. Certainly should have been a
caution.
Waving the imaginary card is a real pet hate of mine and should
always be a caution. The foul which led to it certainly should
have been a caution too, late and reckless. My thinking is that
Mr Scott chose to make a point about the card waving, rather
than punish the initial foul.
The second challenge made by Dewsbury-Hall was by no means wise.
However, given the precedent set by Mr Scott throughout the
game, this wasn’t even close to being worthy of a second
caution.
In terms of the penalty, I believe he gave it for a ‘foul’ by
Watkins on Daka rather than a handball. I would have thought had
it been given for handball, Watkins would have received a red
card rather than a yellow, which I assumed was for DOGSO with
intent to play the ball. I may be wrong though.

Can't help but feel Scott got a bit suckered in by Young and
McGinn's reaction to the second foul by Dewsbury-Hall, making it
look a lot worse than it actually was. Not sure if he McGinn
might've blocked his view right at the last second too but of
course it's up to him to position himself appropriately.
On the penalty incident, far too passive with his positioning
for me. As soon as that ball was chipped into the box I'd be
expecting him to follow it in and get wider, but he's awfully
static and barely in the camera shot when the incident happens.
God knows what he thought he saw.
On a personal note, I've had the pleasure of meeting him a
couple of times in the last few years at various BBFA/RA events
and found him to be very engaging, personable and always good to
listen to, so if this is to be his last season on the list I
wish him well for whatever he does next.

I didn't see the game so can't comment on that but I
wholeheartedly agree with this. Met him a few times and he's a
lovely, thoroughly pleasant guy. I think he would make a very
good mentor in his post active refereeing days, he has the right
personality for it.

I believe he has a background in journalism. Might he be someone
who could lead for PGMOL on press and PR?
