> [member=2]bmb[/member] - anything noteworthy to expect from
your compatriots on Tuesday? Seems the last time we had that
official was away in Serbia in 2013 (we were awful - don’t
remember much else), and he’s been in Glasgow once before for
Celtic v Inter Milan in 2015.

The 2 ARs are pretty much the best in the world. Albert István
is my favourite. Tóth Vencel was Kassai's #2 AR until he
retired, he replaced Erős Gábor. Son of our head of
referees but is 100% where he is on merit - phenomenal accuracy
levels.
Vad II István - depends which one turns up. On a good day he is
excellent, on a normal day his foul detection can be very
random, and he's often one whistle away from a key match error.
Fitness superb, positioning decent. Variable in terms of
management & rapport with players. Very talented referee who was
poorly managed, imo, under the old regime and has therefore
never reached the full potential that he is clearly capable of.
Injury prone which has also held him back. Can appear very
arrogant on the pitch but if the fully focused and determined
Vad turns up then he will do well.
Karakó Ferenc - just hope Vad doesn't get injured! Started out
brilliantly, in fact JCFC has pointed out more than once that I
raved about him to start with. Then arrogance took over and his
progress went into reverse and made Vad on a bad day look like
Collina in comparison... There was an incident where he lied
(factually proven) at a disciplinary hearing, he had (wrongly)
sent Király Gábor off and stated it was because he had called
him the Hungarian equivalent of a mofo ( the full word
obviously). The recording from his headset showed this had not
happened at all and Király's ban was overturned. This put his
integrity into question and it was a couple of seasons before he
started to earn any sort of respect back. The last 2 seasons he
has been far more relaxed on the pitch & his refereeing has
benefitted & he's starting to really show that promise that he
showed early on.

What a fabulously absurd affair Tuesday night was.
On the way to the game, the heavens opened. I’ve rarely seen
rain like that in Scotland, and certainly never for so long. We
were utterly soaked through long before getting to the stadium.
We got in after kick off, but I was convinced it would be
delayed. More fool me!
The conditions were farcical - the type that no league of any
kind starts in, but international competition has different
considerations. Scotland scored after 6 minutes, at which point
the game was suspended for 90 more, before eventually restarting
at 21:35 local time.
I have all the sympathy in the world for the officials, and
ultimately everything worked out. Conditions were identical for
both teams, and the rain didn’t impact the goal.
I thought the referee dealt with a number of situations
sensibly, though he was hardly taxed. There were 2 nailed on
cautions for SPA, and otherwise everyone was well behaved.
AR1 is speedy with a flag, and both ARs didn’t doss about for
obvious offsides.
The penalty in 90+3 was found by VAR and is certainly in the
category of handball that IFAB have got to get rid off. UEFA
guidance is not to give handballs where defensive hand position
is affected by opponents, and that was borderline, and barely in
an unnatural position. Everyone missed it, so that was VAR’s cue
to keep the game going that bit longer. Had the ref seen it and
chosen to play on, it may not have been given.
Either way, a game for the ages, and Scotland top with 12
points. Who could have seen that coming?

Tóth II Vencel - AR1. Son of Tóth Vencel, our head of referees
but as you saw his position is very much on merit. Arguably our
top AR although I love Albért István (AR2) - absolute love it
when he is on my team games. Not a really a game they could
fully shine in given the conditions but I am glad it went well
for them.
Vad has been demoted to Category 2 from July to make way for
Berke Balázs, who has been promoted to Category 1. Only about 5
years late! Berke is already 39 so unlikely to make elite now
but I am very excited by this development. I hope these 2 AR's
are teamed with him although they might end up retiring Tóth II
was 45 in March and Albért was 43 in Jan so will hopefully stay
around for a while.
I suspect next year Bognár will make way for Bogár Gergő,
he's 31 so has time on his side still, but he will most likely
be our next elite referee. Vad I am sure will continue as a VAR.
Interestingly neither Berke nor Bogár are FIFA VAR's, nor are
either of our ladies and they all did their VAR courses 1 season
before the 4 who are!

No. He did a couple of qualifiers this summer. First
appointment, however, with national teams.
