courtesy to his manner. He hails from Four Marks near Alton in
Hants.

John was a valued member of the local RA when he lived in
Croydon. No airs and graces about him although it was obvious
that he was destined for the top, and I had the pleasure of
lining to him several times before he became a FL ref. With
Burtenshaw, he was one of the fittest men on the FL list. I had
expected to see him in charge of an FA Cup Final, perhaps 1988
or even 1990 after he received an extension to service beyond
the normal retirement age, but it was not to be, and the 1990
League Cup Final was the pinnacle of his career.
Medstead & Four Marks - a station on the Mid Hants 'Watercress'
preserved railway and currently the highest operational railway
station in Southern England. But then you probably knew that
already ;D

I know nothing about railways AT. You are very right in saying
that John Martin was unlucky not to get an FA Cup Final. It
surprised quite a few people in the game. He had the reputation
of being strict but fair and I don't think all the clubs warmed
to his style. Whether that had any bearing on the matter I do
not know.

I think it probably did. His decision to award Everton a late
free kick in the 1984 semi final when underdogs Luton were
leading 1-0 was pedantic to put it mildly (think Dienst in the
last minute of normal time of the 1966 World Cup Final), and
Everton went on to win 2-1 and the Final v Watford 2-0. One poor
decision doesn't make a poor ref but his strict interpretation
of the laws did not help in this case.
Talking of the 1966 World Cup Final, RIP Gordon Banks, surely
the best keeper England have had in modern times.
