Good , I thought at the time on Sunday that three minutes was
woefully inadequate especially as there were six goals they
alone took more than three minutes, underplaying like that
affects the integrity of the competition, time wasting needs
clamping down on at all levels .

Interesting however that Collina is also floating the idea of a
'mercy rule' (Times) where little or no time would be added to
save teams from further humiliation when the scoreline doesn't
matter. Club Bruges at Benfica in the CL on Tuesday comes to
mind which did it for the Bruges manager Scott Parker.

Sadly the fault lies with the officials who do not enforce the
laws of the game. Like most issues if it’s approached by all in
the same way. The players would adjust quickly. For example, the
games I have watched this season, I have paid particular
attention to the goalkeepers and when they have the ball in
hand. The law still states 6 seconds. The ones I have counted
the average time the keeper holds the ball in his hands is 24
seconds. Just start multiplying 24 seconds by the number of
times the keepers have the ball in hand ( unless he is losing
and running out of time of course). It will total a lot if time
wasted in the game and time which is never added on. So the refs
could have a big part to play in reducing the time wasting and
very easily done. The Laws are there. They just need applying by
those at the top which will make it a lot easier for those at a
lower level.

The actual time lost is so easy to deal with by using a stopped
clock approach and playing either 30 minutes with the ball in
play, or 45 minutes elapsed time, whichever is the greater per
half. More difficult to deal with are the "tactical" injuries
that are becoming increasingly obvious - goal keeper develops a
foot injury half way through a half for no apparent reason.
Whilst he is being treated the rest of team gather for drinks
and a team talk from the manager. The other is a team under
pressure and one goes down holding his head (I haven't seen much
of this in the ladies game). Can deal with the second one -
play stops for head injury; player not allowed to return for 5
minutes and only after being checked by a medic.

This makes sense from a medical point of view (delayed
concussion for example) and does away the tactical "head injury"
simultaneously. Of course the primary problem with these
"injuries" is not the blight on the game but that players with
genuine injuries are potentially ignored because of the
wolf-crying that has gone on before. This sounds like a
tremendous idea. I see no downside.

Finnally soemone in 'power' has recognised what has been stated
on this forum for a long time.
Referees at both PL & EFL are at best being careless bit more
likely incompetent when assessing injury time.
Time for off field timekeepers to egt avery game at the very
least 60 minutes of ball in play, and further more not allowing
set plays to be complete before blowing the final whistle.

and even more obvious when you get teams using them as a
'time-out'.
Especially frustrating is that referees and fourth officials
seem oblivious to it and don't appear to make any effort to
either prevent them in the first place, or hurrying everyone
back up to restart the game.

At present football doesnt have a team offence of time wasting
so what would you do to hurry them up?
In rugby a free kick can be awarded at anytime and the other
team can then go on the atrack (see stopping huddles at
lineouts, water carriers limited in number they can enter field
etc)

The fault does not lie with the officials but their superiors ie
pgmol, we saw at the world cup what happens when the superiors
insist on the officials pay close attention to time wasting
tactics etc.
