*Side note: the red kit not doing him any favor, too. There is
often controverse when Makkelie wears red. I remember Real-PSG,
angry Tottenham vs Sporting, Poland-Argentina, now Dortmund.
Better choose the ugly yellow next time…

encroachment -

Is Johnson right with what he says about VAR protocol (I've
tried to look it up but not managed to find wording so far) and
if so what are people's thoughts on if it applies to this
incident?
I was reminded that if an attacking player who had encroached
scored a rebound but a defender also encroached then the penalty
would also be retaken after VAR intervention rather than an
indirect free kick given, which I'm not fully convinced is the
fairest approach.
I strongly, strongly disagree with the suggestion that we should
ban penalty rebounds altogether!

I thought he had a poor game and failed in particular to deal
with dissent from Dortmund (Can and Bellingham in particular).
The delaying of the penalty should have seen at least a couple
of players booked.
He gave soft free kicks the entire night, one of which stopped a
3 on 2 break.
Fernandez could have been sent off for a second yellow late on.
Possible penalty after 8 minutes when Can shoved Havertz in the
back when he was shooting.
Also missed a shocking potentially career-ending tackle by
Bellingham on James (no foul even given!) right at the end,
clear red card.
Far too lenient throughout, despite being very whistle happy.
Not a good combination.

Cannot see how that is a possible combination - unless you mean
too many free kicks and not enough yellow cards?

Somewhat difficult to say he was lenient when he gave out 7
cautions

I'm surprised there's any players left with all of these
"potentially career-ending tackles" occurring.

How can it be "correct in law" when the law isn't followed
"correctly" in all encroachment situations given there are only
6 possible encroachment scenarios to consider?

Imo Danny’s weakness is to continue the game after an OFR. I can
tell by his body language that it really affects him :(

If Dale Johnson is correct (and the Dortmund defender did not
impact a Chelsea attacker from playing the ball) then would
Dortmund have grounds to appeal the VAR decision and have the
game replayed form that point? UEFA have previously set a
precedent with the England U-19 women's team where they replayed
a game following the wrong refereeing decision following a
missed penalty.

No there is no remit for replaying the game after an incorrect
VAR intervention. In section four of the VAR procedures it says
In principle, a match is not invalidated because of: ...
review(s) of a non-reviewable situation/decision
The previous replays surrounding penalties have been for a
absolute objective wrong application of law, e.g. a scored
penalty with encroachment from attacking team seeing an indirect
free kick given rather than a retake. This is at worse a review
of a non-reviewable situation so there are no grounds for this,
as there has been no incorrect law application as once reviewed
the correct restart and such took place.
