D MAKELLIE: CHE V BVB

Usual business from Danny so far. No issues to note as expected
from him. Also a random note, he's ditched his book for just a
regular YC now, as seen when booking Sule for correct time
wasting, which was good to see as refs tend to avoid time
wasting early on. Also, great advantage in the build up to the
goal. Strict and picky but consistent so far!
2nd half
VAR gives a penalty to Chelsea for handball. Understandable that
Makkelie didn't give it on pitch but a pen for me due to
distance and the way his arm stretched out from body. And then
the dramatics of a retake! Very exciting. However, BVB will have
the argument they were following the Chelsea players into the
box. I'm not sure what the law is, but I'd feel hard done by if
I were BVB.

Not sure of the law myself but it seems unfair to penalise
Dortmund defenders for encroachment when the worst offenders
were the two Chelsea attackers?
Are we saying that if 10 Chelsea players encroached and 1
Dortmund player, the Dortmund player would still be penalised
based upon that decision?

It turns out that it is correct in law, however it seems a bit
daft to me and can be exploited if a team really wanted to.

Correct in Law. If both players encroach and a goal is scored
the penalty is retaken. I think if it had gone in tho we would
not have seen a retake. It was the fact the defender cleared it
that forced the issue.

Good performance from Makkelie, always calm and composed.
Had no chance to see the handball for the penalty in real time
and the conclusive angle was from the camera behind AR1.
In the premier league the defender might have got away with it
but not in uefa competitions.
Retake correct as the defender who played the ball after the
attacker took the penalty encroached. Nowadays the encroachment
is penalised if the offender plays or has an impact in playing
the ball next, right or wrong lies with the powers that be.
I am sure someone will approve of the red worn tonight.

Yes it would still be a retake in that scenario.
I guess the point is that VAR will review so there's no
justification for a defender going into the box because if an
attacker goes in and scores a rebound then that would be
disallowed for encroachment and play restarted with a defensive
free-kick.

Average from Makkelie today. Correct VAR stiff for me. The other
game was feisty for Meler. All correct YC with two Brugge
players lucky not go see a second yellow. Correct penalty call.
Two wrong offside calls as well from both ARS.

I know in Europe you're going to get that handball decision, but
do we think this is fair?
He's so close, with his arm down by his side, and he was
actually looking away when the ball was hit...

players. As if he’s distracted by something or someone.

while, or even take a short break and come back stronger than
ever before (the best example is Marciniak!). Continuing on this
track doesn’t do him any favor, it rather causes (reputational)
damage imo.

Agree with all of that.
Van Boekel is becoming an issue for him on VAR. Only reliable
VAR at the moment seems to be Tomasz Kwiatkowski
