Have to agree Lukic should have gone just before half time.
Another case of managing a situation in order to keep 22 players
on the field i think as per orders from above. At this rate we
may as well amend the rules to state three yellows equals red
instead of two.
Great spot by Taylor for the Brentford penalty.
Overall a good performance from Taylor, just the debate around
the Lukic incident just before half time.

Very hard to disagree with that opinion. Clear trip around the
half way line by a Fulham player as a Brentford player broke
forward. Free kick awarded but no card.
There was another incident a few minutes before where Toney in
attempting to kick the ball missed and kicked an opponent, who
was sliding in, in the face. A difficult one for Taylor who
decided not to issue a card.

Which apparently was similar to the one that Kav didn't give for
us on Saturday I have seen but I haven't seen it to comment on
it

My general feeling is that it can be slightly 'easy' to win
points on RateTheRef by just 'not being noticed' as a referee,
but this seems a contrary case - I thought Taylor displayed a
really excellent level of officiating last night and should be
much praised for it! Easily assuming that PGMOL will be happy
that Lukić didn't walk, then I think it was a faultless
performance: very focused, always ready to step in and not just
passive, wise card and foul choices. Keeping up such a level, I
think Taylor could easily ref the CL Final in Istanbul this
season.

Because I rate Taylor so highly, this was a poor performance in
my opinion:
Lukic HAS to walk, that is a clear yellow card and had he not
been booked I cannot see any way in which a yellow card would
have not been shown. Yes, I do believe it was a genuine attempt
to play the ball (which may have saved him), but Brentford were
on the break in a dangerous situation.
Further action should've been considered with Toney's kick to
Lukic's face. I accept there wasn't necessarily intent but he
was late and it endangered the opponent. Maybe VAR could've
asked Taylor to take another look with a view to SFP. Had that
happened and Taylor then stuck to his original decision I
would've been happy with that.
At one point, Wissa (?) jumped into Willian in the Brentford
area and went down holding his head/face and Taylor awarded a
free-kick to Brentford, a very poor decision. If it was a foul
(which it wasn't) it would've been a penalty to Fulham. I don't
really want to single out Brentford for the 'dark-arts' as I
know that Fulham have used them this season, but there was
definitely a few occasions where free-kick were bought (which
Taylor fell for), the penalty included, an extremely soft
decision. It was annoying because Taylor on the other hand
showed a firm and correct approach in awarding Willian a yellow
card for simulation.

I don't think it was a poor performance but neither was it
faultless as Mikael suggests imo.
To not produce a 2nd YC for Lukic is one of those incidents that
could easily rebound on a referee. Suppose Lukic had gone on to
score a crucial goal. OK, it didn't happen but it has happened
in some games.
Because Anthony Taylor is a top class referee and did manage the
game well overall, should it give him more leeway than lesser
referees would be allowed? Would there be more criticism if it
was say Peter Bankes or John Brooks?
If the word from above is not to issue a second yellow card if a
referee can think of any conceivable reason for not doing so,
also poses dangers. Will players get the message and be
prepared to commit cautionable fouls despite being already on a
YC. And if they do get sent off, up will go the cry of
inconsistency. Then again, what will be the impact at lower
levels of refereeing?
I was surprised there was no YC for the challenge on Lukic
shortly before his foul. There was some similarity to the
McTominay challenge against Liverpool. At least he got the
ball, but nevertheless it could be considered reckless because
of the follow-though and I felt the YC was correct. In this
case, it was accidental (as the commentators kept bleating) and
Toney was quick to apologise, but the way he went into the
challenge was in my view reckless and the injury to Lukic's
cheek obvious.
Wasn't sure about the penalty as contact wasn't clear from the
angle I saw, but to me the way the offender moved away outside
the penalty area and his expression while his team mates were
complaining suggested he knew what he'd done.
Full marks to AT for spotting Willian's attempt to con him.

Clear Second Yellow for me.
Taylor is an excellent referee most of the time however he has a
disaster in him. The FA Cup final the other year and Spurs vs
Chelsea and Liverpool vs Man City this year are examples of
that. I doubt he will get the Champions League final. Marciniak/
Makkelie will.

Rosetti loves an 'easy' (short-term focused) choice and assuming
he keeps his WC form, Marciniak is the obvious candidate. But,
IMO, it would be silly to leave the Pole with really nothing to
achieve having made it 'all' in six months(!). Remember, the
Polish official only refereed one CL SF (rather easy-going
Liverpool vs. Villarreal) and never an EL final in his career
either. So it would be motivationally unwise IMO, see
Kassai/Clattenburg.
Makkelie would be the deserved choice having been denied it last
year by Paris SG. However his form is actually quite weak, and
at the moment he presents with as a 'solid' Elite option and not
really more than that, tbh. Tonight should be a decent barometer
for his 'shape'. How much -- a) Paris is still an issue even if
PSG don't qualify or b) Roberto feels bad and is happy to give
Makkelie the final despite not being at the top -- remains to be
seen I guess.
This leaves Taylor, four years older than Makkelie and very safe
pair of hands. It seems he has returned from Morocco in very
good form. There is a decent chance there will be no English
team involved this team. He never 'beat' R16 at EURO (yet) and
his WC ended after two group matches. Rosetti really trusts him.
I think there are many good arguments in favour of
Taylor-Beswick-Nunn controlling the CL final this season. Let's
see how it all pans out!
