SIMON HOOPER - Man City v Newcastle Utd

Saw this on TV and I must say I was impressed with Hooper. He
might not have the image of a modern top flight referee but his
officiating was of a very high standard. He appeared to have
very good control over the proceedings and clearly wasn't going
to be swayed by the tiresome whingeing of some of the
footballing "stars". I particularly liked the way in which he
dealt with the 'handbags' incident. He possesses a calm
authority and must now surely be reckoned to be appointed, quite
safely, to some top of the table and challenging matches.
When he first entered the ranks of SG1 he didn't have a
particularly easy time and there were people who wondered
whether this was a promotion too far. Well, I think Hooper has
answered his critics and with interest. Very well done to him.

The appointments Mr Hooper is receiving at the minute, and the
way he is breezing through them, suggest he may be a candidate
for the FA Cup final.

That's not an unreasonable suggestion and were the appointment
to go on merit then I think Hooper would be a worthy candidate.
However, these things tend to be allocated on a "Buggins turn"
principle so I would expect Tierney, Attwell or possibly A
Madley to get the call. I think Attwell and Tierney are most
likely and really couldn't say which of the two is the
favourite.

Thought he was good yesterday.
He has a very laboured running style, a bit like Andre Marriner
but he is a bit stockier than most SG1 refs but he manages to
keep up with play ok.
He did our girst game this season v Forest and thought he had a
good game then.
Shame he was stuck holding the boards on the cup final last
weekend as his performances this season would have merited
getting the middle

A question is: did he forget his whistle?
The teams were all set to kick off when he went over to the
fourth official who handed him something and as he got back to
the centre circle he attached a whistle to his wrist.

Yes, I noticed that incident. It may be that he was going over
to give the coin to the 4th Official and then attached his
whistle in readiness to begin the match. I have seen this happen
so often in professional matches and I never quite understand
why it's done. Surely the weight of a coin can't be very much to
carry about ? I always used to tuck the coin in the back pocket
of my shorts but invariably the coin is handed over in senior
football. Are referees under some instruction to do this ?

I always end up loosing it, or it falls out in the middle of the
pitch.

Having reverted to analytical microscopist mode I am almost
certain that Hooper does not pass anything to the 4th official
(the only doubt being that they both have magnetic implants, or
are members of the magic circle). I'm also fairly confident
that Hooper is handed a whistle which he then puts on as he
walks back. This is a black whistle. However at the toss Hooper
certainly has something dangling on a strap from his left wrist,
most likely this is a whistle although the image is too blurred
to be sure, if it is a whistle it does not look to be black in
colour, possibly silver but reflecting the grass. As Hooper
starts to walk back from the fourth official he does not appear
to have anything dangling from his left wrist.

It puts me in a mind of an incident at Portman Road in the mid
1960s when I was a boy. At the start, before calling the
captains to him, the referee came running over to the section of
the crowd where I was standing and said " anyone got a coin ".
Much ribald comment but someone gave him a coin and he sprinted
back with a grin on his face. The referee ? I am pretty certain
it was Harry New.

As a linesman, I was once sent to the dressing room in the
middle of a game at Walton in the 1970s to fetch a spare
whistle, the 'pea' in the referee's sole whistle having given up
the ghost. I offered the referee my silver metal Acme Thunderer
on a Surrey lanyard, having got it in my pocket for just such an
occasion, but he refused the offer. Obviously a member of the
Geoff Roper 'low-key school of whistling' I don't think he
progressed beyond the Isthmian League.
