VAR can't recommend a review until an actual on-pitch decision
       has been made.
       [/quote]
Probably a limitation of VAR then. Although you could take the
rugby route of “I think there’s been an act of violent conduct,
I would like to check VAR to confirm this”.

What happened there, Attwell having problems with his
       Comms/contact with VAR?

They are bound by the protocol, which is completely difficult to
rugby. That's not to say the protocol won't change over the
years, but at the minute VAR cannot do anything until the
referee has actually made a decision.

It sounds like Attwell had seen royal get pushed, but wasn't
sure of the culprit, so asked Tierney, who confirmed it was
Ziyech, Attwell produced the red card, and then Tierney reviewed
the decision, and called attwell over to the monitor. At least
this was Kelly Cates explanation anyway.

Sounds a good explanation, i would guess Attwell said i am going
to issue red for the punch/push into the face can you plse
confirm the correct recipient of the card, when the red was
issued var could then ask him to view hence he issued yellow
       instead.
However if Attwell had not seen the incident, var could check
everything but only recommend a visit to the screen if in the
opinion of the var a red card offence had taken place, thus
ziyech would not have received yellow.

I don’t think he could have seen it as it was behind
him, discussed with AR,but still didn’t produce a Red Card until
after he showed 2 YC’s to other players,it seemed as he was
       waiting for confirmation

I'm not sure the protocol would allow Attwell to ask VAR for
information and it seemed to me he wouldn't have seen it as
TillysDad suggests. If Stuart Attwell wasn't sure what had
happened, I would have thought the only information which led
him to initially produce the RC had to come from Darren Cann who
he spoke to, or the other AR or 4o.
It looked messy but the right decision was eventually arrived
       at.

Only saw a bit of the game but sounds like the old Attwell
again. However, Ziyech has to be sent off for that. At least
it’s not clear and obvious. And it’s minimum a second yellow.
Attwell should have stuck with the call/ sent Ziyech for second
       yellow.

From being in the stadium I can tell you not 1 person in that
ground was happy with Attwell during the game, seemed like he
was letting far too much go which he paid the price for on more
than 1 occasion when scuffles broke out multiple times

Just watched the highlights,Attwell had the yellow card out for
the original foul by Ziyech,so the yellow he did receive should
       have his second,total mess
