The BBC tributes also included John's comments on the penalty
spot being marked out during a game, with the referee overseeing
proceedings before allowing a penalty to be taken. A smallish
chap, looked a bit like Vic Callow but I've heard Jim Parker at
Derby mentioned. Perhaps they were separate incidents. Can
anyone confirm please? RIP John, simply the best!

The penalty spot incident was indeed af the Baseball Ground and
the referee was John Yates of Redditch. Sadly, I do not know the
name of fhe man with the bucket.

Less amusing than the previous suggestion, but it was Bob Smith.

The BBC NW correspondent Phil McCann was probably too young to
be involved! [emoji12]

After the mention of the rivalry and friendship with Barry
Davies, I came across this article from 2020 in a joint
interview over a glass of wine. It brought back great memories
for me of some of the key games they each commented on.

In which case I imagine Whistleblower will be as impressed as I
am (and by no means for the first time) by your brilliant
internet detective skills.
