Sad news indeed. Someone who was a massive part of my
footballing childhood and beyond. RIP Motty.

Yes, sad news indeed. R.I.P. John "Motty" Motson. The iconic
voice of MOTD and BBC Football for many years. Here's an article
from 2018 featuring his comments and a clip from an interview
with Brian Clough about Referees.

I love that Clough interview. All the current managers/coaches
need to watch it and learn from it.

I had the pleasure of meeting John Motson on a few occasions. A
thoroughly likeable man with no side to him or pretensions at
all. He felt enormously fortunate to be doing the job he did and
we were very fortunate to listen to his commentaries which were
always fair minded and informative.

I met him as well and 100% agree with your comment. He
commentated on the Marlow .v. Plymouth Argyle FA Cup tie in
November 1993 and chatted with the match officials at length
before the game. Off topic, but Peter Shilton was managing
Argyle at the time.

When I was young I wanted to be a commentator and would spend
hours pretending I was motty & clive tyldsley. A genuine great
of the game gone. RIP

RIP John Motson, thanks for all you have given to football and
football fans.
I remember well John doing radio commentaries in his early days,
prior to him getting the tv gig,very articulate and painted a
wonderful picture.
John wasnt my favourite bbc commentator, but was very
knowlegable and came over very well indeed. I am sure a great
rivalry and friendship with Barrie Davies helped him up his
game.
The Ronnie Radford moment at Hereford will live long in our
memories.
A sad day and a gentleman taken from us far to soon.

The BBC, in their tributes to John Motson on the News, have of
course been showing the Radford goal for Hereford against
Newcastle which Motson himself, as the commentator that day,
said launched his broadcasting career. In the build up to the
goal there is a clear picture of the referee from a sideways
angle. I have been trying to remember/work out who it was and
have come up with Ken Burns and Denis Turner as possible
contenders. Does anyone definitively know ?

Tis indeed Dennis Turner my friend.
I believe he was from Cannock IIRC.

Thank you TTFL. Turner was indeed from Cannock. On my one and
only ever visit to Old Trafford, when I was nobbut a lad, Mr
Turner was the referee. He used to appear fairly often at
Portman Road. One thing I remember about him is that he always
looked as if he was enjoying his officiating. He had a
respectable 11 years on the National List before retiring from
it in 1979
