How would it be fair on Man United if he was allowed to play?
What if he had a stormed and got man of the match. It was a
clear red card and the fact he misses the next game is football.
If he didn’t want to miss it he should have booted it up field
instead of trying to head it out

Always used to be that you'd miss the next game in the same
competition ie a red in the league would see you miss 1 or 3
league games but still be able to play cup games but that has
now been changed (can't remember how long ago). I suspect that's
why it's thought to be harsh all of a sudden.

Arteta, Pep and Klopp are the most whigny managers in the PL.
Arteta especially this season his antics on the touchline has
been disgraceful and he's been lucky not to have a time out and
watch a game from the stands.
Howe doesnt really criticise referees or come out and slag them
off in press conferenced like the above do so i think the
comments towards Eddie not having attention to detail towards
the LOTG is frankly absolute rubbish Scally Bob

Yet in the semi final of the cup it was a good rule according to
the sky team

I suspect the reason why Howe said it was harsh is not because
he doesn't know the Law on handball but because it is the first
mistake Pope has made all season and he will miss a cup final as
a consequence.
Also, as has been mentioned above, it is an anomaly that yellow
cards in the League do not count in the cups but red cards do.
Joelinton is currently on 9 yellows but another yellow today
would not have seen him suspended for the final.
Taylor applied the Law correctly. It's just a bit sad because
in this case, as Mr Bumble said, "the law is a ass"!

The problem with cautions / send offs in cup competitions only
resulting in suspensions in the same competition is that a
player in a team that is losing a cup-tie can commit misconduct
safe in the knowledge that any suspension will be served next
season (if at all). Its a "free-hit" and, unfortunate that it
is for the Newcastle 'keeper, thems the breaks (as one of our
recent ex-PMs said).

I think the problem seemed to be that suspensions ended up being
served at other clubs and often a season or 2 after the red
card. However if red cards are to be applied across the leagues
in terms of suspensions then for parity so should yellow cards.
A player can just as easily move during the transfer window on
4/9 yellows and end up serving the inevitable totting up
suspension at a different club.

I can ustand cautions, red cards and suspensions incurred in cup
competitions being served in league games but not those incurred
in the league games being served in cup competitions if that
makes sense.

From what I’ve seen, I have no problem with any of Taylor’s
decisions yesterday. He’s one of the top refs and it shows
compared to some of his colleagues. We don’t get him very often
at Newcastle and given that we’re not allowed Oliver, it was a
nice change to have one of the top refs in charge.
In terms of Howe’s comments on the red card, I think they were
quite clever. He isn’t the type to berate officials in any case
and particularly not in this case where the ref was right. He’s
also good at protecting his players. The comments may have made
him look a little foolish, but I’m sure he actually knows full
well that is a red card, but he did what any good man manager
does and protected his player in public. I’ve no doubt it will
be discussed privately between manager and player and that’s as
it should be.

The word 'harsh' has come to mean virtually too severe to be
correct but I believe this is not good usage. Taylor was
absolutely correct to show a red card to Pope, indeed it could
accurately be said to have been a dereliction of duty had he not
applied that sanction. His action was neither harsh nor gentle,
it was simply correct However, the result of this is that a
player, who is not a serial offender, misses a Cup Final and
that can quite properly be described as a harsh experience for
the unfortunate suspended player.
