David Coote - Chelsea v Saints

I've been a long-time lurker but today pushed me over the edge
to register. One of the worst performances by a referee I can
remember seeing in the 750+ live games I have been to.
He had no control of the game throughout. He started off by
booking Koulibaly for a questionable foul, and then ignored
several fouls after that. There was time wasting from very early
on which again he totally ignored.
Koulibaly then commits the most obvious of second yellow fouls
just before half time, and he somehow stays on the pitch.
The game got very chippy due to his total failure to deal with
persistent fouling, and in the second half it got worse. No
authority to deal with the fractious nature of the game, and it
all came to a head when Azpilicueta took a sickening blow to the
head. Somehow this didn't result in a red card, and it all got
very messy after that. Players taking forever to walk off the
pitch when subbed, and such was his inaction that players took
it upon themselves to move the players off, while he stood
       impassively about 60 yards away.
There were then only 12 mins of added time, despite Azpilicueta
being down for 11 receiving treatment and a total of 11 subs,
not to mention the time wasting that he permitted throughout.
It might not be raised by PGMOL as - barring the kick to the
head there weren't any "key" decisions wrong but he let a game
descend into chaos by a total failure to show command and
       control of the players.

Dont rate Coote at all cant believe he is doing the Carabao Cup
Final as wouldnt even put him in the top 10-12 in Select Group 1
and hasnt even had a good season so far.
Makes you wonder what the PGMOL see in him, maybe a thank
you/reward for wprking for a CFA?

The kick to the head was absolutely sickening. It ticks the box
of endangering the safety of an opponent, so I don't understand
how it's not a red card? There wasn't even an announcement of a
VAR review. Maybe there's someone more educated on this than me
who can explain. It obviously wasn't intentional but we're
always told now that intent doesn't necessarily come into it.
I forgot to mention in my first post he also managed to play on
for a minute with a player down with a head injury in the first
       half.

A genuine attempt to play the ball, have a shot, bad choice
given player proximity but its never a red card (imho). A foul,
       yes, beyond that its unfortunate.

Yes it was awful. I've only seen that clip on twitter and not
the whole game so can only comment on that incident. I also
think it should have been a red card, possibly though because of
the outcome rather than what the LOTG say, but I can understand
why it's not, it was an attempted shot at goal and ultimately a
very unfortunate accident. You knew how serious it was by the
players reaction, when players from both teams are urgently
signalling to the benches to get the medics on, you know it's a
really bad one. Out of interest how did the game restart?

The problem with this IMO is that decisions to send players off
when they've actually won the ball but go in with excessive
force / endanger the safety of an opponent are defended, yet
here he's not won the ball and endangered the safety of an
opponent. So how can it not be red?
@bmb the game restarted with a free kick to Chelsea. Mara was
       booked for the foul.

cannot comment fully as not seen the game but 9 yellows makes
you wonder how much control he had...

Or how much control the players had over their own behaviour...

Watched this game, very much as a neutral. Thought Coote had a
reasonable game, perhaps gave Chelsea a few soft free kicks in
the first half and perhaps could have dealt slightly better with
the Southampton play acting/time wasting in the second half - he
       did caution a couple though.
The injury to Azpilicueta is very unfortunate, I don’t think
anyone could have argued if it was given as a red, but I agree
with bmb that my thoughts on this are more likely due to the
outcome of the incident rather than the incident itself.
I’ve never really rated Coote as one of the top officials but he
       certainly wasn’t awful today.
