Players miss an open goal when they have one chance and a split
second to take the shot. VAR officials have umpteen replays and
as long as they want to make a cock up!

I think it's sensible to take Brooks out of the action a bit so
can understand him being replaced on next few games, although I
think David Coote is one of weaker VARs so I'm not convinced by
his appointment to Arsenal V Man City.
It was a strange Monday for Ref Watch to change its start time!
I missed the first half an hour of whatever Dermot Gallagher had
to offer. I did hear him say there hadn't been a new directive
around referees being mobbed by players. Who knows whether
that's correct or not.

It was only luck I switched on early and saw RefWatch from the
start. DG's take on the Brentford goal was that VAR may have
been all too aware / panicked having taken up 3 minutes
analysing the first situation which was more subjective and
overlooked the second phase which was conclusive. At least I
think that's what was said. I found him a bit repetitive to be
honest I wasn't impressed with Steve Warnock's replacement
today as a pundit. More time was devoted to the Brentford
incident than the Brighton disallowed goal where the line was
drawn to the wrong defender. The 2 pundits laid stress on how
important those serious errors could prove to be for the 2 clubs
at the end of the season but of course there's a lot to play for
in the meantime.
There was a brief mention at some point of the Assistant's role
in the VAR room but that could have been explored more. Neither
was there mention of the AR's initial decisions in the 2
incidents. From the footage of the Brighton goal, Burt /
Bennett certainly didn't flag and were running back towards the
centreline.

I would say the Chelsea penalty appeal was more than 60/40 in
its response - I believe Dermot Gallagher said on Ref Watch he
thought it should have been a penalty and Dale Johnson suggests
PGMO have accepted VAR should have intervened.
Johnson also suggests ESPN have been told that Swarbrick is
still Head of VAR. I find this odd if it is still in any kind of
working capacity because it doesn't seem like it's really
possible to do both roles. I also think it adds more potential
embarrassment when for instance the BT commentator said on
Saturday 'The incident has been cleared by Neil Swarbrick, the
Premier League's Head of VAR...'

I wonder if Brooks has been stood down or if he has asked for a
period of time out to reflect.
It may depend on his mental health.
Some people want to be taken off games and reflect, others want
to be back in action asap.
My thoughts are with Brooks and Mason.
Marriner a good appointment for tonight but with Coote on weds i
am not so sure, there could have been better options.

Kavanagh, Cook & Robathan also have a Tuesday game, although
it's at Crystal Palace so they could get there ok from Stockley
Park.

If I were Howard Webb I'm not sure I would persevere much with
Mason. He was an average referee who could count himself very
fortunate to be in the SG1 where he was just about the weakest
in the cohort. Always looked close to making a hash of a match
though some very strange decision making so I'm not surprised at
this recent VAR debacle. He still deserves proper care and
support however.
Brooks is a different matter. First of all, I think it's
absolutely right that he has been stood down from his VAR
duties. Depending on how he is, it might be worth giving him an
on field refereeing appointment very soon to try and build up
his confidence. Brooks has had a pretty meteoric rise through
the ranks and depending on your temperament ( I have never met
him so don't know ) you can start to feel a little bit special.
A most unfortunate mistake like this, if handled properly, can
be a very good learning experience in that you realise you have
lots still to learn and a high degree of diligence is always
required irrespective of any natural talent. I hope those who
manage and coach him will know the best way to help him through
this difficulty. Those who, after a mistake of magnitude, beat
themselves up excessively need to be assured of their merit and
how the experience can be put to good use in future. Those who
try to make light of their mistakes need to be reminded of their
responsibilities. I believe it's the same in most professions
and walks of life. I've had pupils who reacted to their mistakes
in both ways and so I hope my different responses were
appropriate in each case.

Everyone who has commented on this topic across the world have
brought up one recurring theme: referees are humans. No matter
how any of them you have or how many screens you have in front
of you, that human error element will never be removed.
This is the main reason I was against VAR from the beginning.
Every decision is still one persons opinion.
There is one thing I wanted to flag (pardon the pun): there was
long VAR check on the rashford goal at Leeds yesterday, which
showed he was a yard onside. Before VAR that isn’t even a
decision as it’s so clear. Same with the disallowed goal shortly
after. We seemed to have lost that in-between medium where
players were either level, or it was too close to call and play
on was called.
