I have copied and pasted the article from a link that I came
across if this true it’s brilliant to see Webb taking swift
action and possibly accountability
Referees' chief Howard Webb has called all officials to an
emergency meeting and could AXE blundering VAR duo after being
left AGHAST as howlers saw Arsenal and Brighton denied
New refs’ chief Howard Webb has summoned all officials to
Stockley Park for an emergency summit after two embarrassing –
and potentially crucial – VAR blunders in one day.
An aghast Webb – who is understood to have reacted incredulously
– may now axe the bungling pair after ordering an urgent review
in which all options are on the table, according to sources.
The Yorkshire born 51-year-old, who returned to the UK last year
after a stint in the US, has ordered all Premier League
referees, assistant referees and VAR officials to the meeting on
Tuesday. Attendance is thought to be compulsory as Webb seeks to
avoid any further catastrophes.
The new chief was forced to contact the Gunners and European
hopefuls Brighton to 'acknowledge significant errors in the VAR
process', according to refs’ body PGMOL.
Their statement added: ‘Both incidents, which were due to human
error and related to the analysis of offside situations, are
being thoroughly reviewed.'
The acknowledgment came after both clubs were left incensed by
the decisions, potentially holding huge ramifications for their
respective ambitions this season.
Mason, also 51, failed to spot that Christian Norgaard was in an
offside position when he crossed for Ivan Toney to level.
Mikel Arteta, the Arsenal manager, said 'principles' of
defending have to change when the rules 'change' in reference to
the decision to allow the goal to stand.
Brighton, meanwhile, revealed yesterday morning that they had
received an apology from the refereeing body - which they
accepted.
In their draw, the offside line was drawn from the wrong Palace
defender by Brooks after Pervis Estupinan had scored for Roberto
De Zerbi’s side.
'As was confirmed to the club by PGMOL last night, a serious
error was made in disallowing Pervis Estupinan's goal at Crystal
Palace yesterday afternoon,' the club said.
The lines drawn in the VAR room to determine whether Pervis was
in an offside position were drawn incorrectly, and the goal
should have stood.
Brooks was due to be VAR for the Merseyside derby tonight and
Arsenal v Manchester City on Wednesday night. PGMOL declined to
comment on whether he would remain in post for the games.

Assuming this is true and the meeting is on Tuesday, Oliver,
Burt, Bennett, Madley and Atttwell won’t be there.
Perhaps he has released it as a method of showing he is taking
action.

Hard to believe Brooks will be allowed to retain his VAR
appointments for tonight’s and Wednesday’s games. Putting aside
talk of any punishment for the error itself,, it would just be
good management to take the heat off him as it must have some
effect on these referees’ mental well-being.

BBC Sport reports that a meeting is being held and other outlets
are reporting it. Not surprising as it is all rather
embarrassing, and a crisis of confidence must exist. It will be
interesting to see who the VAR is tonight in the Liverpool
derby. The BBC makes the point that Brooks is on duty tonight.
Therefore, I can hardly see him remaining if only to take the
pressure of him.

They may well be match altering decisions, but are no worse than
some of the goal scoring opportunities the players miss during
EVERY game.
Yes, action need to be taken to eliminate these mistakes, but
the impact needs to be viewed in context of the season and how
many mistakes the players make.
If we are dismissing the officials for just these, then any
player who misses an "open goal" or a "one on one" should also
be dismissed.

I had always made the assumption that the ‘Additional Video
Assistant Referee’ would have input into offside decisions given
that they seem to be ARs in their day job.
I also assumed that, in instances where the game has stopped,
that whichever of the two officials is not driving the review
the other would at least be looking at a screen in case he or
she spots errors such as happened at the weekend.
Clearly I was wrong on both counts. Was I alone in making these
assumptions? I probably was. It wouldn’t be unusual.

Are we any worse off than before VAR was introduced?
Whatever, given the cost and effort that has gone into VAR, it
should do better.
Howard Webb needs to understand why these mistakes were made and
then decide what needs to change. Removing officials from the
firing line would be sensible and to reassure stakeholders but
that begs the question as to whether there are enough trained
VARs.
Players make mistakes and a coach will work with them to improve
the player and try to reduce further similar errors. Likewise
with VARs until such time it is clear that they are not suitable
for the job. Have we reached that stage yet?
What a sad situation and 2 individuals must be having a
difficult time, mortified by their errors.

Interesting what the actions of the ARs were in the 2 incidents.
My understanding was there was no flag for offside in either
situation, (is that the case?), which would be a mistake for the
Brentford goal but correct for what VAR then disallowed for
Brighton. It must be one thing for an AR to have VAR correct a
mistake but quite another to have made a good decision only for
VAR to wrongly overturn it. I know it's meant to be a team
effort but it's essential the on-field officials have confidence
in VAR, so I can only imagine what Oliver, Burt and Bennett felt
when they learnt what had happened. Referees and AR's have to
live with their own mistakes, but as they have been in the VAR
room themselves perhaps on reflection they will have some
sympathy. If this meeting is taking place, it will hopefully
help to clear the air.
