This is the age old thing that people think they can post and
say what they want because they are using a user name rather
       than their actual name.
Wrong. There are many cases of lawyers forcing forum owners to
provide the actual details of members so that they can issue
libel cases against them. If you say something that may be
libellous the fact you did so under a pseudonym is neither here
nor there, if the person or organisation that has taken offence
against it decide to take action they will find your identity.

Oh dear !! - when I first posted this question I had no idea
that all this potential unpleasantness/legal possibilities even
existed around these kind of forums
one certainly lives and learns even though one is 'getting on a
       bit'
Thank you to posters for enlightening me

It is always good counsel for us all to bear in mind the
difference between an opinion and a fact and it is potentially
       troublesome to confuse the two.

This is very true. Of course some people offer fictitious names
and details when registering for a forum and it is an
interesting point in how much responsibility is lodged with the
forum owners for establishing the truthfulness of registration
details. Too often, it's the forum owners who are pursued by the
lawyers which is why our excellent moderators remind us all ,
from time to time, about being careful with our posts.

I have been on the wrong end of far too many such phone calls
from the legal peeps, although over the years have built up a
good relationship with most of them. That means I get yelled at
less & they politely & calmly ask me to sort it out. At the
start it did amaze me how quickly & easily my phone number was
found out by them - home & mobile! It's an infrequent thing now
because the vast majority of our posters know what lines not to
cross and the admin team are very quick to remove anything that
can cause those calls to come. I'm glad we are where we are now
as opposed to 5-10 years ago!
