Exactly, in the laws isn’t it you shouldn’t play on for a red
card. Didn’t Rocchi have a similar situation and UEFA admitted
he got it wrong.
What would have happened if United had attacked had a few shots
then Reading go up the other end and Carroll scored?
He can’t bring it back as they have had an Advantage. Then a
huge scandal would follow. Or what if does some work
defensively? Stops a goal?
If it’s red, whistle should go. Clearest yellow card of the
season but he should have gone earlier.

You can play advantage on a red card if there's a "clear
opportunity to score a goal", which I don't think really applied
here.
In the situation you describe, where advantage is played, as
soon as Carroll gets involved in play again, the referee would
stop play, issue the second yellow and red, and restart with a
drop ball to United. Otherwise Carroll would be sent off at the
next stoppage in play.

I'm pretty sure the laws have been updated to prevent the
situation you describe from arising. I think if the player who
is to be sent off becomes actively involved in the game after an
advantage then play is stopped and the red card shown.

Correct - as soon as the player becomes involved in play after
the advantage you'd stop the game and send the individual off so
they wouldn't be able to impact the game. If there were a
further advantage arising from a 2nd intervention, or still
considered a likelihood of a goalscoring chance arising you'd
presumably be able to keep playing but I'd want that to be the
equivalent of someone through on goal.
