Darren England - Man Utd v Reading

Though I like this particular referee and his style, it is odd
that he’s refereeing the same team in successive FA Cup rounds,
a minus mark for the appointments secretary there.
Man Utd thought they’d scored, but a VAR check ruled that
Erikson (?) was marginally offside. Again we’ll hear the
grumbles about marginal decisions being given in favour of the
defending team, but offside is offside in this case as it is a
clear matter of fact, not opinion, just like a run out, a
stumping or hit wicket in cricket.
Then there was a shout for a penalty by the home side but again,
a fairly easy decision as the Reading defender clearly made a
good tackle, no spot kick resulting.
Darren England has had little to do aside from these two
incidents as the game has largely been played in the Reading
half and it’s only a matter of time before the floodgates open
and the goals start going in.

The only incident of note in the second half was the needless
sending off of Reading’s Andy Carroll. Fortunate not to be
cautioned for a dangerous scissors type tackle in midfield, he
then stupidly barged into a United player to get the overdue
caution.
Carroll then flies into an appalling tackle which saw the yellow
and red cards brandished. Reading manager Paul Ince was not
impressed with his player and his reaction was doubtless
unprintable.
A fairly easy evening for Darren England.

Agreed, good performance from Mr England.
With regard to the var disallowed goal, i think it was Weghorst
who headed the ball towards Rashford was the person in an
offside position when Eriksen initially crossed, however a
Reading player touched the ball before Weghorst headed it. No on
field review so could not be a subjective decision. Var decided
it wasnt a deliberate play for the ball, whether correct or not,
i assume.

Must admit I was unsure about the offside and whether the touch
by the Reading player must have been considered not deliberate
play. I'm also confused as to what constitutes a new phase of
play.
No problems with Darren England who did a good job.

Why is it VAR who consider whether it is a deliberate play or
not? Surely it should be the on field referee who makes the
final decision given that it is an opinion.

Yes, good point. I should have added a caveat when saying
England did a good job as I was surprised Carroll didn't get at
least cautioned for his first bad challenge.

I've only just seen the highlights. I thought Darren England was
very unwise to try and play an advantage when Carroll clattered
into the MU player for his 2nd yellow card. I always thought
that if a referee knew that a player was going to get a 2nd
yellow card leading to a red (and presumably DE did), they
should not play advantage unless it was obvious that a goal was
going to be scored. Fair enough, Darren did bring play back
before despatching Carroll, but the tackle was crude in every
sense of the word and should have resulted in immediate action
rather than following an attempt to play advantage.

Exactly, in the laws isn’t it you shouldn’t play on for a red
card. Didn’t Rocchi have a similar situation and UEFA admitted
he got it wrong.
What would have happened if United had attacked had a few shots
then Reading go up the other end and Carroll scored?
He can’t bring it back as they have had an Advantage. Then a
huge scandal would follow. Or what if does some work
defensively? Stops a goal?
If it’s red, whistle should go. Clearest yellow card of the
season but he should have gone earlier.
