Sad news that Phil Dowd was diagnosed with Parkinson’s four
       months ago.
Found this fascinating video on you tube with him on the golf
course chatting about his experiences and funny moments.
Well worth a gander if you have a spare half hour or so.

Extremely sad 😞 and I sometimes think when I see the new
younger lads coming through eg 18/21 year old refs how they
missed out not by long from knowing and seeing the likes of Dowd
       / Webb / Poll / Clattenburg/ Barber / Durkin …. We were blessed
early 2000’s up to three four years ago the talent was amazing
and I use to moan but those guys are even to this day absolutely
miles ahead of the current crop bar Oliver Taylor and Gillett
       nobody else would be PL
But Phil Dowd is a absolute legend snd I wish him well in his
fight …. He also did a great podcast a few months back

This is very sad news, seems like a great bloke as well, going
off interviews. I Believe the players quite liked him as well.

Very sad to hear this news.
I always liked Dowd as a referee, especially the further he went
on in his career. He refereed with personality and generally
       accurate decision making.
Is there a link to the Youtube video and podcast mentioned
       anywhere?

Aweful news, thoughts are with Phil.
I remember Phil as a referee with great character, a no
nonesense referee who was not afraid to be unpopular with the
bigger teams. A very good referee in an era where there were so
       many very good referees.

Sad to see this news. I now know several people with Parkinsons
as I too suffer from a Neurological illness so I empathise with
his situation but with the right support and love I am sure he
will continue to be the same Phil that for anyone who has
crossed his path will no doubt have enjoyed his company.
Sending him my very best wishes moving on......

A really interesting and emotional watch. I was a big fan of
Dowd and the way he managed games through the sheer force of his
personality - I always assumed that he'd be slightly brash and
cocky in real life but watching that video he seems like an
extremely mild-mannered and thoughtful man, who looked a bit
haunted when talking about some of his high profile mistakes and
his struggles with his weight. He should definitely reflect more
on some of the brilliant performances that I remember him
putting in - I remember him being a very brave ref who treated
clubs and players without fear or favour- I remember a crucial
and correct penalty decision in Liverpool-Reading at Anfield in
the 2010 FA Cup where he gave a game-changing penalty against
the home side in injury time. He was always a referee I was
happy to see refereeing my team. So sad to hear about his
diagnosis and I wish him all the best.
