Kompany should have gone but, that apart, I thought Taylor had a
pretty decent game. Certainly, a compelling game to watch and I
always think, when it is, the referee has played a part in that,
letting it flow when he can but always in control. Taylor has
not been my favourite referee but I have to say that he is
developing into one of our better referees.
I do question though the wisdom of appointing a Manchester based
referee to a fixture of this magnitude involving a Club from the
City where he lives and one of their fiercest rivals from 'down
the road.' When an incident occurs involving one of the home
players, such as that with Kompany, and the referee is seen to
treat him leniently, ammunition is being provided to those who
may just question whether he would have shown the same leniency
towards a Liverpool player. Also I thought the City manager was
treated very leniently for his extraordinary rant at Martin
Atkinson and I have seen managers sent to the stands for far
less. I know we have debated before Taylor's credentials for
refereeing a Manchester club and I am not actually questioning
his impartiality but it does give the opportunity for doing so
and puts additional and unnecessary pressure on the referee.
Maybe though it does highlight the dearth of experienced
officials considered competent enough to handle games of this
magnitude.

Well it's all down to opinions but I would suggest the reason
that contact wasn't "full on" in the Kompany challenge was
because Salah tried to leap out of the way. It was Salah's
action that did that and in no way diminished the dangerous
nature of the challenge. Interesting that ex-players like
Shearer, Ian Wright and Robbie Savage who were all capable of
excessively robust and naughty tackles all felt Kompany was a
lucky boy and it should have been a RC. Hackett, while praising
Taylor's fitness and movement, also felt it was a clear RC
offence. I don't know whether Clattenburg and Gallagher have
expressed a view.
Agree that Lovren YC was correct and I'm certainly not
suggesting that overall Taylor was terrible. But if one
believes he missed a straight RC, plus the odd reservation about
foul detection for example and even game management, it tends to
put the performance in the 'reasonable' rather than the 'good'
category.
But as I say, it's just an opinion.
It was certainly an exciting game but not always top quality.
Was it just me or did the pitch look slightly heavy in places?
It just struck me that the ball held up sometimes causing some
passes to look under-hit.

For me Kompany's was a nailed on Red Card and so I would regard
that as a Key Match Error. Other than that Taylor did reasonably
well though there was little about his performance which spoke
of "star quality" and I think that was a match in which it was
possible to achieve that accolade.
I was talking to one of the senior FA Observers recently who
made an interesting comment about the Taylor/Oliver debate. He
said, for a short time, a couple of years ago, Taylor was
generally reckoned to be "shading it" over Oliver but now it is
generally reckoned that after Atkinson Oliver is clearly the
next senior referee.

Clattenburg has said it was a red card. A bit rich for him to
say after failing to send Kompany off twice!

The fact that he didn't "land the tackle completely" entirely
misses the point. Kompany was out of control as a result of
being airborne. He had no way of pulling out of the challenge
so the fact that he didn't seriously injure Salah was down to
good fortune. The challenge was made with excessive force and
endangered the safety of an opponent. He should therefore have
been sent off. It is the action that is sanctioned not the
outcome.

Only just seen the incident on Breakfast news this morning but
that to me should be a red card. Kompany seems to get away with
too many of these challenges.
Can't comment on rest of performance as was unfortunately out
last night.

I don't think Taylor deserves the full blame....
Giving Oliver Liverpool v Arsenal discounts him from doing City
v Liverpool which I think we could all agree is / was the bigger
game.

Two fouls during the game demonstrate why I have fallen out of
love with the game. Last man gets the ball or the man and deny a
goal scoring opportunity - yellow card is appropriate as it is
not DOGSO but when will they ever introduce sin bins of say 15
minutes for such cynicism, denying exciting attacking
opportunities?
One of these was Kompany's tackle which had an additional
element, that of endangering the safety of an opponent. We
cannot allow the outcome to determine the card - this was a
potentially dangerous tackle (intended to get ball and failing
that the man) which should have been red carded. It has no place
in football IMHO. For whatever reason, Taylor let down fellow
referees who are applying the Laws correctly and the importance
of the game cannot determine the nature of the card. I do wonder
if Taylor was referring a less important and non televised match
(say at Cardiff!!) whether he would have red carded the player?
Will the introduction of VAR allow these challenges to be
reviewed?

Thought he had a decent game keeping good control and playing
his part in a good football match. My biggest disappointment is
his failure to deal with the city managers aggressive behaviour
towards Martin Atkinson. This set us back years in the fight
against abuse from managersat lower levels. The laws are the
same throughout the game however mr taylor bottled it. If he
didnt bottle it and chose to take no action then that is even
worse. Had that been steve evans joey Barton or Derek adams a
red card would no doubt have followed but surely the laws are to
be enforced at all levels not just league one and below.

Some people seem to forget the highly charged emotions that
human beings (managers) are experiencing in these situations.
Mr Guadeola (sp?)had just witnessed a foul on one of his players
that Mr Taylor had failed to see/ignored ( and not for the first
time in the game), leading to a very dangerous defensive
situation that should not have been allowed to develop. It is
understandable that he was frustrated and angry.
Also, we do not know what response he received from Mr Atkinson.
Could it have been dismissive/arrogant or similar? We do not
know but feel we should not be demanding coldly applied
sanctions for a highly tense emotional situation judged solely
from a distant TV view.
(NB I am not a City supporter).
