Sad to report that Walter died this week. He was in his early
90s
He was a supplementary ref for a couple of seasons before
becoming a league ref from 1970 to 1978. Ran the line in the
1968 F A Cup Final and was reserve linesman for the 1969 Final
too. Great supporter of local football especially junior
football. RIP.

Walter B(ainbridge?) Johnson born Q2 1931 Kendal, Westmorland,
son of Walton Bainbridge Johnson (1897-1967) & Mary, nee Travis
Westmorland County Referee's Chairman in 1973 and served as
Referees' Representative on the Westmorland F.A. Council for 24
years, being a member of the Association for 40 years and
received the Meritorious Service Award from the national
Referees' Association for services to Refereeing.

Described in an early 70s programme as a clicker for K shoes
(Kendal), married (Marion E Knight Q1 1957) with two children
(Karen Q3 1961, Barry D (Q3 1963)
A boot and shoe clicker is the person who cuts the uppers for
boots or shoes from a skin of leather or piece of man-made
material (usually from a bulk roll).
This includes all components of the upper, including linings,
facings, stiffeners, reinforcements for eyelets and
zip-protectors.

There is a good bit of footage here at roughly 1:40 of Walter
booking the fiery Trevor Hockey in a WBA v Norwich game some 50
years ago. Should have added above what a kind, encouraging and
very pleasant man he was too.

I never saw Walter in live action but sorry to hear of his
passing. RIP

Walter was a frequent visitor to West Yorkshire.Probably sick of
the A65,and its little better today.Had a moustache/never showy
but an excellent referee.Regular in Lancashire also-Kendal base
ideally 'neutral'.
Very sorry to hear the news.

I am told the B stands for Barry by Walters son, who is also
called Barry. Funeral 15th Feb at local crematorium and I hope
to attend
