Pet Likes and Dislikes

I am sure this applies to me as well as to other RTR posters but
there are some pretty egregious examples recently of individual
posters ( no names no pack drill ) showering great praise or
damning with great criticism the performances of particular
referees. As far as I can make out the comments seem to bear
little relation to the actual performance of the said referee,
whether good or bad, in that the whole thing is like a Pavlovian
reaction to a particular referee's name. You don't have to read
the comments on RTR for too long to work out who are the usual
suspects. It's a Forum, people can say what they like providing
it is not discriminatory, libellous or downright offensive but
I, for one, have now come to take virtually no notice of such
hobby horse comments. Perhaps others do the same.

If I am one then I do apologise - I always do my best to balance
the praise or criticise or not comment on performances in
matches that I watch

There was a referee some years ago on the National List who was
nicknamed 'The Snake' by some of his fellow referees ( again no
names no pack drill ). I believe the nickname was acquired by
his ability to slither out of difficult situations with no blame
ever apparently attaching to himself. I dare say there have
been a few like that over the years who would leave their
colleagues hanging out to dry to save their own skins and
reputations.

Precisely, it's the identification of one experience with
another. My contention being that just the name of a referee
will lead certain posters to evaluate their performance as very
good or very bad ( perhaps based on previous experiences of
officiating but other more personal factors might also be at
play ) without any objective assessment of the performance being
commented upon.

Whistleblower makes a very good and valid point. I would also
suggest that it's sometimes interesting to see who doesn't
comment on a particular performance or controversial incident in
a game. Of course, that may be for the obvious reason they
haven't watched the game or even seen the highlights. But I do
wonder, if a referee whom we hold in high regard is thought by
general consensus to have fallen below his normal standard,
whether it's easier to make no comment than join the criticism.
Likewise if a referee who isn't a 'favourite' has a really good
performance, do we acknowledge that, or stay quiet? And I
freely acknowledge I've been guilty on both counts.

And it is common to us all, in one form or another, though we
generally find it easier to detect in others than in ourselves,
I would say.

I think it is very noticeable when some less popular referees
have a decent game, you look for the posts on the game &
tumbleweed, but the second there is even the tiniest hint of
controversy the knives are out & they are being slated left
right & centre. It's very unfair to say the least.
With the popular referees if they make an error it's either
ignored completely, very quickly glossed over by pointing out
how ultra awesome they are, excused or the blame attributed to a
member of their team because they couldn't possibly get anything
wrong. Equally as unfair!
I don't watch enough English football to be able to comment, I
just about make it through the majority of AFCB games but I
always know when one of the less popular refs has a blinder of a
game because there's no thread on the 730963 decisions they got
wrong thereby proving how rubbish they are! The rest of you
aren't as interested in the Hungarian NBI, Romanian Liga 1 and
Eredivisie, which are the games I watch!
PS Cats! The bmb household is owned by 2 cats, would be more if
I could possibly sneak more in without the rest of the bmb
household permanently locking me in a tiny dark room with said
cats! The cats do also own a dog - well a yorkie so more of a
rat than a dog but...
