Offsides are their primary role and function. They will have
been inline with the last defender watching for offsides so may
have been looking at what they should have been and therefore no
view of the incident.

Somebody picked up on Swarbrick being VAR?! It seems that Webb
tried to rehabilitate the (former??) VAR leader with an active
role in the VOR. Interesting move...
Nobody really cares about "high bar" blah blah blah. They just
want interventions for clear penalties - like last night's.
Former players (eg. Redknapp and Murray) know more about (real)
refereeing than our own officials!! :D

I noticed that Swarbrick was the VAR.
I also thought it was strange as I don't recall him being VAR
much before, if at all. Not that I have previously paid a great
deal of attention to VAR appointments.

It was a clear penalty but Jones was not in, and made no
tangible effort to get himself into, the right position. This is
why many penalty decisions aren’t given on field.
Saw it with Bramall as well last night, another clear penalty
refused. He was also Jogging through the game a lot

I think Swarbrick has had three VAR appointments since New Year
so presumably is now considered a regular VAR again, much like
Dean and Mason.
It seems Webb wants the threshold for VAR intervention set
reasonably high but the challenge was always going to come when
more errors started being made on-field, so we'll have to
monitor how well VAR does with intervening where necessary going
forwards when these occur.

Does it? In my opinion, this is a narrative being created by the
media based on their own perception ("VAR ruins the game by
intervening too much") and 'bubble' -- which is parrotted by
some people on this site who are just anti-VAR rather than
analyse it on it's own merits (to be clear: I'd get rid of it
tmr and focus on just making the refs good but the clubs are too
powerful and demand it and there's nothing we can do...) -- when
the reality is much more nuanced. 'Boffins' who talk about high
bar etc really just alienate fans: we have this excellent tool
to correct mistakes which can be recognised by ALL remotely
knowledgeable fans, such as Gillett's award to Brentford at the
weekend and this mistake by leaden-footed Jones last night, but
no, "hiGH BaR"... the only real advocates of the high-bar are
the non-refereeing bureaucrats in eg. the Premier League itself.
I hope Webb is strong enough to face them in PGMOL and save our
hitherto terrible VAR system.

Webb certainly seems to have emphasised the Clear and Obvious
part a lot in interviews and the number of VAR interventions
seems to have gone down since the World Cup.
I think I agree with the essence of what you are saying, in that
I don't especially think the bar not being high enough has been
the problem in the PL. Of course there have been times when VAR
has been deemed to have intervened unnecessarilly but I think
there's probably been just as many cases where it hasn't
intervened at all when it was widely considered it should have
done. I remember when VAR was first introduced in the PL and
there were basically no subjective decisions changed at all for
the first two months which wasn't a good place to be so I hope
we're not going back to something like that.

Since the resumption after the World Cup VAR has been much less
involved on penalty decisions, and they are generally being
consistent, a word that everyone in football constantly says is
needed. The only outlier I would say was the penalty in the
Newcastle vs Fulham game where Mike Dean went rogue on the new
instructions and recommended a review for a foul by Tripper that
certainly hadn't been a clear and obvious error, and arguably
wasn't even a foul.

I watched last nights showing and thought that the whole referee
team had a great game. They let it flow where possible, sensibly
managed the game and dealt with any flash points quickly and
sensibly.
On the talking point about McTominay… I honestly don’t
understand how anyone could think that is a penalty in the PL
(let alone a clear and obvious error). The defenders foot is
grounded and his action is completed. The attacker clearly runs
straight into it deliberately. He actually kicks the back of the
defenders leg and not the other way around. He’s initiated
contact to try and ‘buy’ a cheap penalty. The referee had a good
angle in and clearly made his decision pretty sharpish.

I think referring to Mr Jones as "leaden footed" is grossly
unfair.
