Replacement Linesman Orient v Man Utd 16/08/1974

There is an old Second Division game up on The Big Match on
Youtube from the weekend of 16/17 August 1974 where Orient faced
Manchester United. Late in the game a Linesman/Assistant was
injured and was replaced by a man who looked like somebody in
the crowd. He had a formal white patterned shirt and slacks on
therefore had to lend the Man Utd Physio's dark blue top to
prevent any clash with the Red shirts of Orient or the all white
shirts of Man Utd. The referee was John Yates (Redditch.)
I would put the youtube link in the post but as a newbie I don't
want to break any rules in my first post.

Mr C Gregory (Colin?) of Woking, a colleague of mine on the
Isthmian League in the 1970s. A nice chap and decent referee. I
don't know his replacement in the flared trousers, but he seems
to have been a pukka referee and linesman, with good straight
arm action to indicate a throw-in and coming round on to the
goal line for a corner, as was the custom in those days.
Definitely not something you would see now, but four minutes of
fame for the chap in the flared trousers, whoever he was!

in August 1952

Found refereeing in Isthmian League 1973-4 and in Athenian
League 1977-8

Yes, that's the one. Interesting that he ended up on the
Athenian league which was not part of the contributory league
system at the time. A mix of up-and-coming refs and I lined to
Philip Don at Banstead, and recently-retired FL referees such as
John Homewood at Redhill (a real pleasure) and the
less-than-pleasurable experience with BML James back at
Banstead.
