Apparently Grimsby Town wanted to postpone their game against
Harrogate Town on Friday. Referee Sunny Gill apparently wanted
to inspect pitch at 11am on Saturday. He did and was advised by
club/groundsman that there was no chance the pitch would defrost
before 3pm. He did not call it off then, but inspected again at
1pm. Then he called it off. I do not know what the protocol is
but a lot of money would have been saved by clubs, caterers and
supporters if it had been called off Friday. Usually the clubs
know what their pitch is like so there must be a better way?

Great refereeing performance by Mr Simpson at Pride Park on
Saturday, including a great advantage for the first Derby County
goal, hopefully the officials in League 1 & 2 will learn a thing
       or two!

Allowing clubs to call off their own games would undoubtedly be
abused. Star striker injured, no problem, sorry EFL but our
pitch won't be playable in time.

I agree. Maybe some exceptions when storm x is about to hit and
wind speeds are in excess of 100mph to prevent supporters
travelling into dangerous conditions or if a club has a photo of
a pitch under 3 feet of water after a flood for example.

Offence did occur but he then unfortunately identified the
incorrect player resulting in a sending off. Referee obviously
has to with his assistant on this.
