Michael Oliver> Villa v Leeds

Lots of niggle in the game and Oliver has dealt with it quite
well. Flashpoints at end of half with a disallowed call for
offside which was very tight and an excellent call by Bennett.
Also a scuffle on the near sideline between Cooper and Buendia
was quickly dealt with as well by Oliver/Burt.
Job well done!

Not been the easiest game to referee. Oliver is trying to let it
flow and that’s of course commendable, but the players aren’t
making it easy for him.
Mind you, his standing in the game and the respect in which he’s
held certainly helps when it’s a tough, physical game like this.
Good on field call to disallow the Leeds goal, very tight but
correct and backed up by VAR Andy Madley.

An enjoyable game well controlled by Michael Oliver. I was
pleased to see he took the opportunity of a dead ball situation
to caution Martinez and that he added nearly 2 minutes on top of
the 6 that had been indicated at 90 minutes. Liked the way he
talked to the young Leeds player a couple of times when the lad
got frustrated.
Personally, I didn't think there was enough for a penalty for
Leeds and their appeals didn't last long or were all that
strong.
The AR (Bennett?) will be disappointed that he wrongly flagged
the second Villa goal offside although I think it was closer
than Gary Neville suggested. The earlier call to disallow a
Leeds goal was excellent.

Neville called the Rodrigo one very close (looked clearly off)
yet the Buendia one clearly onside (which looked close)
For an assistant referee as good as Simon Bennett, he will be
disappointed having another offside decision overturned. He is
usually so reliable.

The second half was much more enjoyable to watch, with the
players getting on with it a lot more and Oliver remaining
largely anonymous.
He has a pleasing man management style and he talks to players
rather than lecturing them. This allows for fewer problems with
dissent and the players acted a lot more sensibly in the second
half.
The time wasting was interesting to say the least and Michael
Oliver added all the time that Martinez was taking at goal kicks
and the like. So we had the fairest amount of time added on at
the end but I still think, a la rugby union, there should be an
independent timekeeper to add on time at the referee’s say so.
Overall, Michael Oliver had a good game and used his personality
and man management to control the game rather than using an oft
used tactic by others of spraying cards around. The approach
certainly worked after a frenzied first 45 minutes but he acted
calmly and wisely and didn’t overreact to some players losing
their heads.
IMHO, Oliver is still our number 1 referee in England.

I'm surprised Olivier was appointed to this game this weekend
considering there is a North London and Manchester Derby this
weekend, but can see why he was as someone stated in a earlier
post that Attwell lost control earlier in the season and it
probably needed a Taylor or Olivier on this match, which was
handled expertly by England's number 1 referee

How many times did it take before he cautioned Martinez for time
wasting? Also I've noticed with Martinez that he very often when
kicking out of hands that he appears to be outside the area when
he lets go off the ball to kick it.
