Mansfield of Banbury (Match Officials Clothing)

Mansfield of Banbury (52 High Street) who supplied darts, fancy
goods and notably F.A. Cup & F.A. Amateur Cup final match
officials clothing
The Mansfield's were a North Yorkshire (Northallerton) family
who moved to the Coventry area when Ambrose (1857 Yorks - 1904
Warks) married Fanny Dearing (1860 - 1951) of Coventry. They had
5 children (The first three were born in Marylebone, London but
the two youngest in Warks)
Harry, the second child (1890 Marylebone - 1969 Banbury) married
Irene Ellen Cockerell (1890 Coventry - ???)
and had two children, the eldest, Frederick Rowland 22 Dec 1916
(radiologist, aluminium works in Birmingham Sept 1939 - ???)
Kelly’s Trade directories for Banbury indicate that Fredrick
Mansfield’s leather, glass and fancy goods business at 52 High
Street is first mentioned in 1952 although the family probably
set up business in Banbury in the late 1930s.
Frederick’s father Harry was a successful businessman and
saddler who ran leather factories and shops. One of the
factories was in Britannia Road and another in Charlbury.
Frederick expanded his side of the business to include a
sportswear business in Parsons Street with prams upstairs. By
1965 this side of the business was in the Palace Arcade where
the HSBC bank is now. He also ran the Banbury Toy Fair. The
High Street shop must have closed soon after as by 1972 No. 52
High Street is Henry’s (menswear). The last mention of Mansfield
is in 1973 at the Palace Arcade.
In his spare time Frederick was a keen huntsman with the
Warwickshire Hunt and enjoyed pheasant shooting at Gaydon, north
of Banbury.
He also had a National Hunt trainers’ licence. There is an
article on him in the Banbury Guardian 4th July 2013.
It would be interesting to compile a list of the years when
Mansfield supplied F.A. Cup & F.A. Amateur Cup final match
officials clothing
There is an online photograph of the 1957 F.A. Cup referee and
all three officials for the F.A. Amateur Cup final

Banbury's Britannia Road was home to quite a number of clothing
and sewing factories until the 1990s when it was redeveloped and
became a largely residential area.
