Sam Purkiss - Shrewsbury vs Cheltenham

This tackle resulted in a melee that saw a player from each side
sent off, after Mr Purkiss didn't give a foul for it
Is this something that it's understandable to miss, or should
any competent referee be making a good call on challenges like
this?

No way to tell from that still. Yes it looks an awful foul from
the still but there is no indication of the ref's position and
either player (or any other player) could very easily been
completely obscuring his view of it. You would hope that one of
the team would have had a good view but some incidents happen in
an area where the view is completely obscured and referees are
not yet equipped with x-ray vision. It would be a whole lot
easier to say yes he should have seen it or no he had no chance
with seeing it if there is a better image that shows where he is
and what his view would have been. I sincerely doubt it will
have been that lovely zoomed in view from one of the many TV
cameras.

Good point. Found the highlights and this was his positioning.
Think it's still inconclusive, can't tell if there's players in
the way or if there's line of sight..

22 and 26 possibly obscuring his view but agree it’s
inconclusive. Looks like the AR that side is the other end of
the pitch so possibly too far away to appreciate the contact. If
that’s the same side as the 4O you’d really hope they would see
that. I guess the next question is has he got his positioning
right and therefore unlucky or does he need to work on his
positioning to help increase accuracy?

Cheltenham had just lost the ball, so think he was heading one
way and had to turn back when the ball was given away - might
explain some of it at least

The video is here, starts just after 1:20. To me it looks like
he did give a free kick, as he went sprinting towards the
challenge as soon as it happened, if he hadn't seen it he would
have had no reason to do that. Don't get to see what the
restart was though. It looks like he is explaining that away 5
is being sent off for the challenge, and home 3 for retaliation.

So another refereeing mistake which will go unpunished. We will
never know whether it was the referee, who was in a bad position
because of the move away from diagonals, or one of the other
officials at fault. Of course there will always be
excuses/reasons why he made a mistake, but we will never know
his side of it. Likewise we will never know if the one man
advantage (and it should have been two) would have made a
difference. The French would be raising a petition !
We lost a player in the previous match to a refereeing decision
made from behind play by some distance, but the video is not
good enough for an appeal.
We may be being unlucky with the appointments, or word may have
got round…we all know that happens, but I would hope the new
regime will be more open.
I now look forward to apologising on Sunday when a major mistake
occurs in our favour.

A player getting off on appeal doesn't necessarily mean the
referee has made a mistake. There are loads of occasions where
a red card has been rescinded despite the referee being 100%
correct in law.

Easy statement to make, but there are equally incorrect red
cards confirmed because of lack of evidence. In general the
referee is supported unless it can be shown he was wrong.
