Attwell; Leeds United vs Manchester City

I thought it was a very poor performance. I'm all for referees
letting play go and letting it flow, but that needs a strong
referee. Attwell is, nor has he ever been a strong referee imo.
There were a lot of niggles, a lot of fouls that should have
been penalised weren't, and then he ended up in the position
where he needed to YC 6 players in the last 30 mins to retain
any semblance of control.

Agree, never been an Attwell fan and today was an example of
why. Never seemed to get a grip in the game or earn respect from
the players. Contrast with the likes of Michael Oliver.
Interesting to see Attwell getting a slating from both sets of
fans on the BBC’s HYS site too.
On the match itself, well done Leeds for giving it a go,
especially towards the end. City again too wasteful at times for
my liking and this could be their downfall in other games. But a
win is a win and it keeps the pressure on Arsenal

I watched the match last night and I also watched Darren England
performing at Turf Moor the night before. I would say that
neither referee performed to their maximum potential, however,
it did make me wonder just how much the six/seven week lay off
had affected their performances.
In effect, the gap has been very similar to the break between
seasons and we know that you have to get back to match
sharpness, which can take some little time/
In addition, have they been given different instruction as to
how they officiate with Howard Webb coming on the scene?

Ditto
One of, in my view, the worst refereeing performances was
Manchester City v Wolves in October 2011 when Mr Attwell was in
charge. In 2012 he was demoted "by mutual consent". He worked
hard to become reinstated and I have seen some creditable
performances since his reinstatement. However, I have also seen
some performances that were reminiscent of the "old" Mr Attwell.
The quote above refers to a City v Brighton match in May 2021.
Last night's refereeing display once again was, in my eyes, like
those pre-2012 performances.
On a wider front it now seems almost impossible to criticise any
refereeing decision since the laws with their many
"clarifications" by IFAB mean that it seems that almost any
decision can be justified. In the past few months I have seen.
to my eyes, two materially similar challenges where one has
resulted in a penalty and red card whilst the other was "play
on" - both were given by FIFA referees and not challenged by
VAR. (For what it is worth I thought both decisions were
incorrect; both should have been penalties, but neither should
have been a red card.) It is difficult for refereeing to retain
credibility when similar incidents can result in such varying
decisions. VAR, rather than helping, has in reality, made this
difficulty more apparent as the "only one view in real time"
argument has been removed. Football laws are much more
difficult to define objectively than, say, cricket or tennis but
are in essence similar to rugby which seems to retain more
credibility, probably because they are less secretive about the
decision making process when referrals to off-field reviews are
made.

He's been excellent in my view in the last year and is surely a
contender along with Tierney (I wouldn't choose Tierney!) for
the FA Cup final however this game along with his last game
before WC at Wolves was below par as well

Feels like personal feelings are clouding judgments here IMO. I
can only recall one decision that the officials got wrong -
giving a corner when the ball last came off of one of the Man
City defenders (although I'm not sure whether either Attwell or
Darren Cann would have been able to see the touch). He tried to
let the game breathe as much as he could, but there was little
he could do to manage the combination of reckless tackles,
holds/pulls to prevent promising attacks, and one Leeds player
inexplicably getting aggressive towards Grealish after Klich had
fouled him, that all happened in the last half an hour.

I missed the first 15 minutes but initially it seemed to me
that Attwell was managing the game pretty well. He talked to
players and for the most part there was little dissent at that
stage. What I would question is whether he responded quickly
enough when the temperature of the game seemed to go up a notch
and some challenges became more feisty. Fouls on Grealish by
various Leeds players began to mount up and perhaps it needed a
word with the Leeds captain to let him know he was aware of what
was happening. It wasn't obvious if he did that.
In terms of free kicks and other decisions, I agree he got most
things right apart from the corner that should have been given.
My impression though was that he didn't change his approach as
soon as he might have done. Of course, the flurry of YCs in
that last half hour was the result of actions by the players,
but did it demonstrate the referee ensuring he kept control of
the game or was it a reflection that full control had slipped
from him earlier?

I know we must not take too much notice of these things but the
Dail Mail reporter gave him 7/10 which by their markings is
good as it is only very occasionally they go as high as 8/10

I personally don’t think Attwell is a bad referee.
But he generally has the same game plan, over manage the first
35’min where by he misses so many bog standard cards, then 2nd
half he has flurry’s of cards, this is generally what happens.
He needs to stamp control early last night, if he would of had 2
yellows one to each in the first 20, I’m sure he wouldn’t of had
6 in the last 30ml in, he needs to be less kind and have a
stronger decisive nature.

I must have been watching a totally different game as, aside
from a missed corner, I can't think of much he got wrong at all.
